If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

I had completely forgotten about this movie which had a brilliant trailer and (unlike many others) totally lived up to it. Completely and happily demented.Great cast. GREAT visuals.

Struggling artist Dave (Nick Thune) creates a cardboard labyrinth in his apartment. Trapped inside the maze (which, like the TARDIS, is larger on the inside than the outside), Dave enlists the help of several friends to find a way out.Dave Made a Maze is a love it or hate it kind of movie. Those who love it will be chin-stroking, tofu eating, bohemian cineastes who actively seek out art-house movies they consider too 'intelligent' or 'quirky' for mainstream audiences; those who hate it will be everyone else.Me? I hated it. The horrible hipster characters, the off-beat premise, the 'isn't it beautiful' aesthetic (No! it looks cheap and ugly): I found virtually every aspect of this film extremely irritating. Setting his movie in an other-worldly environment that obeys no rules, writer/director Bill Watterson has free rein do whatever the hell he likes, but the lack of a decent budget means that what he envisages always looks like a pile of garbage (because it is). Not that mega-bucks would have made much difference—the whole movie is one tiresome exercise in self-conscious wackiness that will seriously grate on the nerves. Unless you sport vintage clothes, thick rimmed glasses, and well-groomed facial hair. In which case, you'll love it (or at least pretend that you do).

The premise of this movie is ridiculous. A man named Dave builds a cardboard maze and once he goes inside, he is lost in the labyrinth. His friends go inside to help rescue him. Chaos ensues. This is the type of absurdist premise that would yield a horribly made film in less competent hands, but in the hands of these people, it ended up being one of my favorite films of the year. It is just so much fun to see the maze and it's inner workings. It was like watching the inner workings of a clock. The acting is top tier and the comedy is spot on and rarely out of place. Actually, everything about this movie is so well done, that I am hard pressed to find a single fault in the movie. It is the type of film that will eventually have a cult following, and that people will come back to when they are tired of the superhero crap Hollywood keeps pumping out.Okay, now that I have been writing this review, I do have ONE niggling critique; the way people die in the film is really "cutesy". Instead of real blood, you see tissue paper flying all over the place. It reduced the deaths to Saturday morning fodder, and I would have liked this element of the film to be a bit more "traditional". Wouldn't it have been wonderful if, when someone died, the real blood would spray everywhere, and the maze would absorb the blood through the cardboard? The movie is constantly billed as a horror film, when it is anything but. It is an absurdist comedy with a heavy fantasy focus. This element alone bothered me enough to have me remove 1 star from my review.

Watching Dave Made a Maze was a blast :) The film has a simple yet clever premise, which allows the set design(the maze itself) to take the main role and to amuse the audience. I loved the cardboard art(the style kinda reminded me of the awesome 'otherside' clip by RHCP) and found myself sucked into each new chamber explored. The film as a hole does not take it self seriously at all and that is a huge plus. It really makes the corkiness and the nonsense shine. Also, I felt that the short length of the film fit perfectly to the given premise. Finally, the dialogue had some funny punches, but for the most part just drove us onward into the well crafted maze(and did a pretty solid job at it), yet I would like to point out that there is one monologue in the middle that I would not easily forget. Adding a lot of depth to the craziness.I hope to see more from the film makers. Highly recommended!
