Simply Perfect
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
BOYKA is the fourth of the UNDISPUTED franchise and once again sees Scott Adkins reprising his role as the unimitable Yuri Boyka, 'most complete fighter in the world'. The plot is a little different this time around and much more character-focused as Boyka finds religion and attempts to make amends for a past transgression. The story is set outside of a prison now so the plot is more gangster themed, but don't fear, there's still a sequence of splendid ring fights that don't disappoint. Although Isaac Florentine wasn't able to come back and direct, the Russian guy they found does a top job and the action choreography is as good as ever. I found this to be the best of the series thus far, purely because it has more heart to it and the presence of a woman in the cast (gasp!) turns out to be an asset rather than a detraction. It's very similar in tone to Van Damme's excellent A.W.O.L. Adkins shows off great range as the hard-man hero and his character arc is solid. The last 30 minutes is chock-full of top action and suspense, with newcomer Martyn Ford standing out as the big bad fighter and an amazing climax to top it off.
The last film in the series was seven years ago. I almost forgot everything about it. I had no time to have a quick glance on those before trying this, but while watching this, all the memories came back. It was different. Different means, they wanted the franchise back in action, so they have started with a simple storyline. Everything was predictable in the film, but that was not the point. They a wanted platform, so to move to the better side in the future.Yuri Boyka was looking forward to take park in a big league, but his last fight did not go well. He won it by a knockout, though the opponent did not survive. That mentally disturbed him, so he wanted to make a few things right. Now, on the eve of the big event, he set to a quick trip to Russia. Why he went and what had happened there, all are the other side of the tale with some good fights and emotions.Scott Adkins was great. This part kind of reminded me the 'Rocky'. Particularly for the sentimental reasons. The mix of that and stunts were good. Familiarity was the weakness of the film, even though enjoyable. Especially it is for Boyka and 'Undisputed' series fans. They surely would love it. It was a wonderful re-initiation, but hoping better sequels to follow and in a grand scale as well. So when's the next one!6/10
Breaking the cycle of the franchise in which the antagonist of the last film becomes the protagonist in the sequel, Scott Adkins returns as Boyka for a third time and the second time as the protagonist. This movie starts off right with a fight by Adkins in the ring doing those amazing kicks he does. Than it keeps it up with a seen of the monster that is the antagonist showing us how ripped and devastating that final battle will be. Worse part of the movie or the concept of the movie is that Micheal Jai White got screwed out of continuing the franchise, as his character, George Chambers (Who was played by Ving Rehmes in the first film when it was about boxing) . As much as I loved Adkins I would love to see White do... anything. But this movie acts more like a Spin off to the Undisputed Franchise, with Adkins character doing a second round as the protagonist, this movie also does not take place in a jail cell, but it still contains fighters who belong in jail.Boyka is a man who spent ten years in prison since last we met him In Undisputed III, going up against monsters, making him and even bigger one, so when he gets out he knows nothing but battling monsters and he wants to use this God given Gift as he likes to put it to make money and give it to good causes, but his conscious gets in the way when he beats a man to death in the ring, but he wants to do everything in his power to make it right even if it means putting himself at great risk in another ring of monsters. If you see one movie about fighting you seen them all. Boyka fights for money cause the money will do some good for some people and cure his soul. I seen it before. It reminds me of all the Early Jean Claude Van Damme movies, so it's not a good movie because of the story, it's a good movie because of Scott Adkins. We get to see what a great marshal artist Adkins is. Adkins combine with the slick motion of the camera as it follows him around the ring is what makes this movie very different from Kickboxer and Blood sport, not that they are not really good movies, it's just that Boyka is good too.http://cinemagardens.com
And finally Scott Adkins is back in the ring. What do you expect from this kind of movies? pure fight and this movie give you that in a good way. nice fights not as strong as vol 2 and 1 but good enough. The whole series are fine and watch all of them if you not. In this one story is a bit messy and weak but does not matter, we are not seeking philosophy in such movie. The only funny thing in this movie is the English accent of actors and actress. if this is supposed to be in Russia so speak Russian, if you want to make Hollywood movie then speak English. it is funny whole thing happen in Russia in small town and every time Russians speak to each other in English with Russian accent :| anyway enjoy the movie
