Memorable, crazy movie
good back-story, and good acting
best movie i've ever seen.
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
'Ghostbusters (1984)' meets 'Men In Black (1997)' sounds more like the start of a half-cocked, wish-fulfilling 'what-if' slurred to a friend in-between drinks at a slightly too raucous party than the basis for a fully formed feature film and yet someone clearly managed to sell it, more than likely during a flustered and frenzied elevator pitch, as a fool-proof way of delivering exactly what modern audiences want. Ironic, really, as it not only represents the kind of shoddy studio schlock that favours CGI spectacle over character or story but also the worst elements of both its most obvious inspirations. It misses the mark in almost every area in which it was so sure it was going to succeed, making it almost satisfying that it bombed so heavily and proved that audiences were smarter than they were given credit for. Yet, there is some occasional charm, amidst the chaos of the story and the straight-up ugly visuals, and a few somewhat entertaining sequences that can be passively enjoyed if you lean into the ridiculousness of it all, with most of the flick's successes solely resting on the fact that the core cast are just charismatic enough that they can almost take the edge off the corny dialogue. Ultimately, it isn't anywhere near as bad as it could've been, but is just plain mediocre. 5/10
During 2013 I must have been living under a rock or something because I didn't even know this film existed. So to just happen upon it on Film4 while browsing was a happy chance - I like RR, I like Jeff Bridges, I like Kevin Bacon... it's dead police catching dead baddies : what's not to love?! As my suspension of disbelief muscle is the strongest in my entire body, I was able to enjoy this in the same way I enjoyed League of Gentlemen or even Green Lantern. Good brainless fun - sometimes it's ok for a film to be just that. Yes it's got plot holes in it the size of Deadpool's ego, but Jeff Bridges' Roy character is a hoot and it's just ridiculously amusing to see 'deados' running around causing mayhem at the behest of evil Kevin. I just think Venkman & co could probably have dealt with the threat in a more professional manner. (I've added an extra half star just to spite all the haters and try to bring up the average a bit. )
Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Bacon star in "RIPD" from 2013.The story concerns a Boston cop, Nick (Reynolds) who, along with his partner Hayes (Bacon)discover a cache of gold while busting drug- dealers. Nick buries his, and then decides against stealing. He informs Hayes that he is going to turn in the gold as evidence from the bust, but he won't mention that Hayes committed theft as well.Well we all know what's going to happen and sure enough, as soon as it can look like a shooting while bringing down a vicious gang, Hayes lets Nick have it. Nick leaves behind his wife, Julia (Stephanie Szostak). Nick is sucked up into a vortex and finds himself in front of a Proctor (Mary Louise Parker) - he's still in uniform. She informs him that he's a member now of R.I.P.D. (Rest in Peace Department), Boston division. His assignment is to pair up with Roy (Jeff Bridges) - obviously once a cop in the old, wild west - and go hunting for undeads, evil people who actually died but haven't yet descended and are sticking around. They wear disguises so they don't look dead.Nick, of course, would also like to bring down Hayes and check on his wife. He and Roy have avatars also so that people can see them, but not as themselves. Roy is a gorgeous blonde (Marisa Miller, in real life a Victoria's Secret model) and Nick is an old Asian American (James Hong).Silly movie, predictable, but a decent rental. There were a couple of good scenes - one was Nick going into the vortex, another was the dead cops chasing of one of the undeads, who is wreaking havoc on the city. On the slapsticky side, but okay.
(Originally seen a few years ago) Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges will surely want to forget this one, it's terribly incoherent, excruciatingly unfunny and just atrocious. The action looks as if it were filmed by UWE BOLL and the dialogue looks as if it were conjured up by a Neanderthal, there's not much to say, it's an atrocious film and the worst film of 2013. 0/10
