Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
Cop Willis is assigned the task of escorting criminal Bey to court where he will testify against rogue cops, and the cops will do anything to silence him.A simple premise and hardly original but still potentially entertaining, but in this case - no. The plot is straight-forward and yet littered with implausible moments, even the 'twists' are obvious. As for the dialogue - after being gratuitously assaulted by Bey's unending excrutiating verbal diarrhoea, I started hoping the rogue cops would succeed - quickly. Anything to end this nightmare.
Bruce Willis plays one of his best older roles in "16 Blocks". I often thought back of "Die Hard with a Vengeance" while watching this movie. Just as in that great Die Hard sequel from the nineties, Bruce chases through New York City, trying to meet a deadline. Just as in Die Hard with a Vengeance he has got a partner who helps him. And just as in several Die Hard movies a bond between the two blossoms. In spirit, this movie has the same charm as "Die Hard with a Vengeance", which is truly the only Die Hard sequel worth seeing...In "16 Blocks" Bruce Willis plays a washed up alcoholic cop, who has to transport a criminal to court. It seems to be a simple job, but unknown to him the criminal is about to testify against several corrupt New York police cops. An assassination attempt is planned to stop the criminal from testifying. Will Bruce Willis get the criminal to court alive? The story really has got many great plot twists and turns. Acting is great. The few jokes are good. But the greatest joy is to watch Bruce Willis and the criminal bond with each other while they struggle to get to court. It is an action movie with lots of room for dialogues however. But I really love that. In that sense it differs from Die Hard with a Vengeance, which was more focused on action alone. This movie truly excels in its true to life portrayal of its characters. Seen this movie many times now, and besides one lesser part of the story, I really enjoy it time and again.
I thought 16 Blocks was going to be one of those movies that would be a prime example of a Die Hard ripoff. But actually if you can get through the first ten minutes, the movie is a different kind of movie than Die Hard. The movie tackle themes such as police corruption, which is big these days apparently. The movie itself features plenty of action and shoot-em-up scenes and there are quite a few showdowns between Bruce Willis's character and the NYPD, which make things quite interesting.Richard Donner's film is about a washed-up, alcoholic NYPD detective named Jack Moseley who is given a simple task of escorting a witness sixteen blocks to a courthouse where a trial is taking place. But those sixteen blocks are the hardest blocks to walk because Jack has ex-partners who want the witness, a fast-taking dude named Eddie Bunker dead.Bruce Willis does a great job as the washed-up cop. Then again, he should because he played John McClane five times in the Die Hard installments. As for Mos Def, it might take some time to warm up to his character. He has such a grating voice, but his personality is quite sweet and I felt the bakery subplot to be touching. David Morse plays a good role as the corrupt cop always on Jack's tail.Overall, 16 Blocks is a highly entertaining action movie if one can forgive the action movie clichés and the annoying voice of Mos Def. The film breezes by in its rapid storytelling and there are a few moments of humor to be had. The film is expertly directed by Donner, who knows a thing or two about action movies. This film is not the Die Hard ripoff I was expecting. I rate this film 8/10.
I almost gave up on this movie after about 15 minutes because of the annoyance of Mos Def's voice. What was up with that!? By the end this became an okay crime drama as Bruce Willis plays a burnt out (alcoholic) NYPD detective escorting a small-time crook the (16 blocks) to a grand-jury session.Willis is impressive with his burnt-out-edness. His character does not resemble any kind of action hero here; unfit, overweight, unattractive, shuffling, gasping for a drink. Well done. And while I like David Morse his character was a bit over-the-top. I mean, I get that they're crooked cops but really, shooting wildly into a crowded NY street and a bus full of civilians. Did the bad cops think they were completely above the law or any repercussions? That they could just do whatever they wanted without consequence? Reminded me a bit of that opening scene with Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L Jackson from "The Other Guys" except that was a comedy. I will say that this grew on me by the end though. 06.13
