Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

My grandfather-turned-widower had this film on VHS ever since its 1998 premiere, though given its lesser status among Disney films it was only a periodic viewing. As my grandfather no longer desired his Panasonic PV-9451 upon moving, I gladly took it into my room. To celebrate a successful hooking up, I decided to view this, as it was the only Disney VHS they had that I have not viewed since I considered becoming a reviewer. Enough backstory, though, so... My response?Given how it was released in the finale of the Disney Renaissance and was overlooked in favor of Mulan, there are most certainly disadvantages this film is presented with. As WDTA worked on this film, the animation is most certainly of a lower quality than the original (WDAS loses no contests to its subsidiaries). It continues to look fantastic in character design, more than can be said of other DTVs, but the more clunky, less fluid movements hinder it significantly in the action scenes. The new characters also feel as though they came out of, admittedly, a more than acceptable fanfic of The Lion King. They barely have connections to the original and are way too hastily introduced as ones we should, seemingly, be familiar with. At least, though, the acting is above average for a DTV, which in an alleged adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is important. This acting is especially apparent in the music, which I will say is this movie's strongest suit. Most numbers continue the tradition of sounding tribal African, while the major one that isn't makes a pretty underrated villain theme. The story does offer at least one good twist in the minor antagonists immediately coming to terms and has a few good jokes, but it flirts way too often with clichés and predicts, annoyingly early, what could have been a likable convolution (Kiara and Kovu's relationship). Some of the humor is also rather cheap (how Pumbaa reacts to "blast", for example). To sum this movie up, this most certainly isn't up there with its predecessor, but it does offer a few strong suits of its own that make it, what I consider, among the best (or, as Nostalgia Chick would put it, least awful) Disney Sequels. If you're a fan of The Lion King or want to relive a 1998 childhood, you will take something out of watching this. For most others, you might want to consider giving it a try if only for its killer score.

This is no match for the original, but it is a superior Disney sequel. Normally, they're just junk (like in Cinderella 2, there was a tradition of plum pudding), but this is an actual storyline that will keep you engaged. There are actually great songs, too! Nothing like "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" or "Circle of Life" but still a great song called "He Lives in You." Unfortunately, though this is not complete junk, there are some things similar to the original, like with A New Hope and The Force Awakens or The Little Mermaid and The Little Mermaid 2 (in The Little Mermaid 2, it turned out Ursula had a sister who also wanted King Triton's trident and was also voiced by Pat Carroll). So though this isn't a spectacular movie and doesn't live up to the original, it's still worth watching. I'd really give this 6.5 stars, but since that isn't an option on the rating and with it being better than most sequels, I give it 7.

this movie is a Disney sequel done right!so why do nuremous people hate it?i understand their are some plot holes and the timeline is kinda uneven, but overall I think it's excellent and I wish Disney would make more sequels similar to this one.Others claim this movie is terrible for these main reasons.1)the animation is nothing like the originalOK first off, while watching this movie I didn't even notice the animation was different till I read another person's review! But their is a explanation for this,Disney has two animating teams,Team A and team B.When the first lion king was being developed,Another famous Disney movie was also in production,Pocahontas.Team A was currently focused on this project so team B was responsible for animating the first film. When the lion king 2 Simba's Pride was being created,Team A had to make it.Honestly,I think they did a really good job!it looks exactly like the original,Except for simba and Nala,They kinda messed up on their designs a bit but that's easy to overlook, the movie isn't based on them anyway.2)The timeline makes NO sense.Again, their is another explanation for this! This movie was made by the opposite team!So I can kinda understand why there are a few plot holes here and there, but I think that those are easy to fill using your imagination,The viewer can make up their own story and just go along with it,so that is pretty simple and a easy mistake to fix.3)Where is Kopa?! (Kopa fans...Be warned for this one)😑your joking...Really?look,I like the idea of Simba and Nala having a son but that would be to much like the original,Plus,Kopa wasn't a Disney creation! Some people might know this already,He was created by a outside company wanting to pitch in on the fame and fortune on the lion king franchise! And while in a interview with the creators behind the lion king 2 they said very bluntly,They didn't even know kopa existed! And maybe if they knew he was around, they would've contacted his creators and had him in the movie! But that didn't happen...So for those complaining where this cub is,Despite how many facts,Theories,And explanations you come up with,he never existed,The creators of this film didn't know he existed,Get over it!(sorry kopa lovers)Overall, this movie is great!i think out of all the Romeo and Juliet cartoon movies I've seen,I think this is the best out of all of them!Despite the minor flaws,It has memorable characters,A ambitious villain,Catchy songs, and lives up to the original movie!I highly recommend giving it a try!Im positive you'll love it!Maybe even more than the first film!😉

During at time when Disney were churning out direct to video-sequels, "The Lion King" was one of the earlier films to receive a sequel. It's a pity that such a intelligent and substantial film as "The Lion King" didn't received a theatrical release, but after the unfortunate box office failure of "Rescuers Down Under" (for the most ridiculous reasons ever made), Disney went to a safer alternative with releasing them direct to video. While I've never personally detested them as many does, there's no denial that they are in a inferior quality. Regardless, "Simba's Pride" has gotten a fan base and has the reputation of being a superior quality of the cheapquels bunch. So is the good reputation deserved? It's tempting to say yes, but unfortunately "Simba's Pride" is hampered by some flaws that makes the cheapquel qualities obvious. On the positive side, "Simba's Pride" does excel in terms of it's sheer charm. The film does have a irresistible cuteness factor that makes the film appealing. The animation is actually quite fine. While it's not on the same level as it's stunning predecessor, it' still better than many of it's cheapquels siblings. The music is pretty good, with a fine score and actually some quite likable songs ("We Are One", "My Lullaby", "Upendi", "One Of Us").Where the film falls flat is on it's screenplay and characterizations. The Romeo and Juliet-esque story offers dramatic potential, but it's execution is disappointingly thin and straightforward, leaving some obvious plot holes. Kiara may portray some spunk now and then, but at the end she's nothing more than a just another poor miserable princess who's unhappy with her situation and the movie does nothing to elevate that. The outlanders, especially Zira and Kovu, does display some dimensionality, but their development are vaguely executed. The film also doesn't really know what to do with the characters from the former movie. Timon and Pumbaa were actually fine in the first movie, but here they are grating. Zazu is personality-deprived. The only one who does portray some spunk is Rafiki, but even his role is limited. So where do I put "Simba's Pride". It is a cute movie on its own merits, but the flaws hamper the film from being as good as it could have been. However, the film is not a total dud, so I'll give it some good points for it's strengths.
