Truly Dreadful Film
Touches You
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
If you are watching a Jason Statham film, you are probably expecting action. "Safe" gives you action in spades--once it gets started. In the opening scenes, there are two consecutive flashbacks that serve no purpose but slow the development of the film. But once the narrative gets going, the action is superior.First of all, there is so much of it. Secondly, the hand-to-hand combat is very convincing--a requirement for any good action film. Lastly, the chase scenes are exciting and well designed. The story involves a battle between three entities--the Russian mob, the Chinese mob, and New York City police. All three are corrupt organizations, and all three want the same thing--to capture a Chinese girl with important information. Statham's character (a former undercover cop) determines to protect the child despite overwhelming odds. The relationship between the two fugitives is critical to the film's story. Statham is up to the challenge, despite his rough, unemotional façade. One is reminded of Schwarzenegger in "Commando" or Statham himself in "Safe". The added emotional content elevates this film above many others of the genre.
This film tells the story of a fighter in trouble with the mobsters because he fought other than he was told to. He was driven to the point of suicide, but is saved by a girl with photographic memory who holds an important piece of information. They help each other navigate the dangerous underworld."Safe" is a very good old school action film. The characters really fight hard, and they keep fighting throughout the film. There is no fancy effects or crazy explosions, they fight only using their fists and guns. It's been a while since I watched a no frills action film. The number of deaths is disturbing but it doesn't feel ridiculous like some films where the lead hero is invincible. The girl who plays the whiz kid is really good in her role, she's very believable. I enjoyed the film. The title is very clever too!
Being a self-confessed fan of Jason Statham (yes, I am seeking professional help for this affliction) I was looking forward to Safe - a film where the cheeky half cockney/half New Yorker takes a young girl under his muscular wing in order to protect her from not just the Triads, but Russian mobsters and even a branch of dirty cops.Obviously we know that 'the Stath' will win though, kicking many heads along the way, but it's the journey we're interested in.Many people will have seen him do something similar in the Transporter (1 through however many have been made since I wrote this). And he did it well for that franchise, i.e. despatching armies of incompetent bad guys without a bead of sweat trickling off his shiny dome. However, here, in Safe, it all gets a little too serious.Statham's previous efforts seem to have a degree of 'knowingness' about them, as if they're just a little tongue-in-cheek (think Roger Moore's James Bond stint, but with less hair of course). In Safe, the bad guys are indeed ten-a-penny and pretty generic. In fact, there's barely one that you'll remember - just see them as Russian Hood #12 and Dirty Cop #4 and that's about as much character development as you're going to get there.Other people have drawn comparisons with the Bruce Willis film Mercury Rising, where he has to protect a youngster from all sorts of gangs. I haven't seen that one, so I can't comment.Overall, Safe isn't bad. There are shootouts. There are fist-fights and even a car chase or two. However, it all just seems a little run-of-the-mill. With the Transporter franchise you had flashy sets and over-the-top action. Here, you have the grimy backdrop of New York at night and a feeling you've seen most of this before.Okay, probably most enjoyed by Statham die-hards, but if you're looking for a generic action flick to fill 1 hr 20 minutes, you could do worse than Safe. Not bad, just nothing that special. Roll on Expendables 3 (or 8, depending on how long they drag the franchise out for).
(64%) A 1990's action throwback with a "mercury rising" type plot involving a man helping a child who knows something that is putting their life at risk. Statham plays a more human character than the typical action movie, and just like Bruce Willis' movie there is some heart and a decent amount of characterisation to proceedings, but this still has plenty of its focus on shooting, driving, and fighting. The plot all-in-all is a bit too over- stuffed, and the action could have been handled a little better and steadier; although this is still a worthy entry to Jason's filmography and well and truly worth a look for action fans.
