It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
Reflections in a razor. After being falsely imprisoned for 15 years, Benjamin Barker, London's most efficient barber, returns to his Fleet St. haunts under an alias to exact revenge on the villainous judge who allegedly drove Barker's wife to suicide and now has designs on their grown daughter. Long-overdue film-adaptation of the 1979 Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, itself derived from George Dibdin-Pitt's play, first filmed in 1928 and again with Tod Slaughter starring in 1936. This time, the material is served up as macabre, black comedy, with director Tim Burton giving the picture an icy-gray pallor--and not just on the actors' faces, but an overall chilly deadness which seems ingrained in the film itself. Glowering, mumbling Johnny Depp attempts a perpetual low-key in the lead--in fact, most of the performances are muted in general--but this works against the film's aim (one presumes) to be a darkly comic grotesquerie. Black-red blood is splashed and dashed about the screen quite stylishly, but the heart of the piece is never found. The hand-picked cast perform their songs more than adequately, yet they are unable to bring these characters to life. Production design and technical aspects first-rate, but exactly what audience was Burton hoping to capture? *1/2 from ****
This is a Thriller Musical and a Drama movie and I love Thrillers. It was released on January 2008, I was 6 years old and I couldn't see it before 12 years old. When I saw this movie, I was so excited. It was awesome and the visual effects were wonderful. The plot is about Benjamin Barker, a barber who went to jail because the mayor of Fleet Street loved his wife and wanted to seduce her. When he got out after 15 years, he just wanted revenge. He was so angry that he wanted a huge revenge. The cast is composed of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman. I think that Johnny Depp gives the most amazing performance as Benjamin. He plays very well and made me feel sad and angry like his character. Alan Rickman is the mayor, he is perfect for this bad character because his face and his voice have something mean in it. The actors sing well and a lot.Stephan Soundheim and Chris Lebenzon, the sound designer and the composer made something top notch. Their song made feel like dancing and singing with the characters. Tim Burton is certainly my favorite producer and when he makes a film with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, you can be sure I've seen it because they make a perfect team.fatoudepp
I can honestly appreciate the sick beauty of the film, the pervert story of good people falling down a dark and twisted life style, its most definitely worth the watch and was very refreshing from the normal bright and sunny happy endings we typically favor. Despite the grim color setting and story line, it's an enjoyable film for those who possess a dark humour. I found that it took a while to get to the good parts but as Ms Lovett says, all good things happen to those who wait and it was the ending that took the prize with me. I must admit the singing wasn't terrific, to be honest it gave me a headache at times but Jonny Depp has some great moments where I was like ''Whoah, that was a nice note''The demon barber on fleet street might not be your typical watch, it sure wasn't mine, but if you give it a chance you just might be as pleasantly surprised as I was, I know I sure will be looking into films akin to this one. Yes, that's how much I liked it, and I'm not even that much of a movie person, I think this is my first review I've ever written. I enjoyed it that much!
This film focuses on Sweeney Todd, a vengeful barber convicted for a crime he didn't commit. Directed by Tim Burton, this film has a screenplay by John Logan, based on the stage musical of the same name written by Hugh Wheeler. The cast is headed by Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman and Jayne Wisener, among other actors.Tim Burton is a director about which I have many reservations. No one disputes his creativity, not their ability to create great movies. The problem is that he makes excellent films with the same ease that makes huge mistakes. So, I had few expectations when I went to see this film, and it still fell more when I saw it was going to be a musical. However, I was very pleased with what I saw, and I think Burton, this time, did a great job.I don't know the original play, so I cannot tell if the script was true to the original story but I think it's a good script, doesn't make mistakes or leaves important questions unanswered, besides having interesting twists and an excellent finish. The actors were excellent, particularly Depp, who knew how to combine his taste for bizarre roles to a strong and deep voice. Helena Bonham Carter also shone, in an obscure character whose obsessive love leads to a journey to doom. This macabre couple really managed to give life to this film, turning it into a mix of horror and musical movie, which thickens as the plot goes to the end. Its a film that proves without doubt that the musicals doesn't need to be romantic and very cuddly, since the musicals can be seen as a scenic (and cinematic) variant of the opera, a so popular and dramatic spectacle in the past. The sets, costumes and visual effects are excellent. We are talking about Burton, so it couldn't be otherwise. Its a fairly graphic film to some extent, with several liters of arterial blood and scenes that may shock more sensitive people. The soundtrack is the responsibility of Stephen Sondheim (author of the original musics and lyrics) and is excellent, remaining in our memory for a long time.
