Panic Room

Trapped in their New York brownstone's panic room, a hidden chamber built as a sanctuary in the event of break-ins, newly divorced Meg Altman and her young daughter Sarah play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with three intruders - Burnham, Raoul and Junior - during a brutal home invasion. But the room itself is the focal point because what the intruders really want is inside it.

Cast, acting, directing, cinematography and editing are very good with Panic Room. Despite some holes which are listed by other reviewers, the plot is not so bad. Yes, the events unfold in quite a predictable way but the movie is still very engaging with its fast tempo and suspense that never lets go. On the negative side, the ending turns out a bit cheesy with too much effort to redeem the character acted by F. Whitaker. One interesting observation is that with good acting and captivating storytelling, the plot holes become less noticeable. After all, engaged audience care more about entertainment than analyzing each and every incident with a fine comb. To sum up, this is a very enjoyable movie with its fast pace, unrelenting suspense and lack of fluff.

I love Fincher. All of the films I've seen of his clearly show his love of cinema. Shots that straight through a key lock to the other side and then swooping back again. A lot of motion. Captivating motion. The house and the safe are also characters in this movie, which I really appreciate. His cinematography makes it clear as to why he's such a wildly celebrated filmmaker. It draws you in. You move through the space, into the space and out of the space while at the same time experiencing a very intense and white-knuckle story that glues you to the edge of your seat. Several times I found myself literally with my back arched and knees locked, feeling the tension. That's what I love about him as a filmmaker. He's visceral. He's able to translate the emotional ups and downs of the characters and the situation in a cinematographic way. He tells a story that captivates, and you experience the telling of the story in rich detail. I'm giving this film an eight. Why, you ask? Well, originally it was going to be a nine, but I found myself distracted by Dwight Yoakam's acting. If you see the film, you'll see what I mean. His character didn't seem fleshed out and his acting was over-exaggerated. One moment he's calm cool tough guy psychopath and the next he's acting hysterical. I didn't feel he was true to the character. It was an interesting swing to see these both sides of the character, but I felt he could have dialed it back a bit. Forrest Whittaker is fantastic at portraying a guy who's gone bad who also has a good heart. There's a gravity to his performance that I really like. He's clearly the most likable villain. At the same time, he wants his piece of the pie.Jarod Leto was solid. I loved his mannerisms. He has a real command of his character's body language, which I really liked. Leto in general has a bright energy on the screen. Has a lot of meltdowns. The mother and child connection was surprisingly caring and believable. You feel the love these two characters feel for one another, and it's a strong element of the story as a whole.Foster was fantastic. Utterly believable. There is not a second where you don't feel the intensity inside of this person who wants to save herself and her child. She's sympathetic. She does this wild-eyed thing when she's under pressure that I really like.Steward was great. I really have not much to say other than, there are a lot of cringy teenage performances that I've seen (The kids in the Visit, anyone?) but Stewart did a really solid job in this movie. I loved this film. I have no complaints about the ending or whatever. I thought it was a top-notch, underrated Thriller. Fincher's a very intelligent, thoughtful filmmaker. I wanna watch another one right now, actually...

I agree with others. Jodi Foster is a gem, but this movie just makes you wonder. She does all the acting stuff, being emotional and enterprising and so on. The problem here isn't with the acting; it's the room itself. If one were to spend a million dollars to create such a safe place, wouldn't you account for eventualities. Like, making it so you could contact the outside world. A simple securely placed land line would do that. Or perhaps a means of outside access. Of course, there is also the whole issue with the bad guys having to get in. What do they want. Oh, yes, soundproofing. That's good because they don't know you're in there. The room is non-functional, no more protective than putting a steel door on your house.

"Panic Room" is one of David Fincher's lesser known pictures, perhaps because it lacks the lurid punch of films like "Seven" & "Gone Girl". In any case, Fincher knows his way around the thriller genre and "Panic Room" is characteristically meticulous and suspenseful. The story revolves around a recently divorced mother (Jodie Foster) and her young daughter (Kristen Stewart). On the first night in their new home they're preyed upon by a group of thieves. They're able to successfully retreat to the safety of the house's 'panic room' but there's one problem: the thieves want in and they're not about to give up easily. On the surface, this premise appears pretty limited but screenwriter David Koepp keeps us interested by introducing new angles that increase the possibilities of the situation. Essentially a 'cat and mouse' game, the script does a good job of maintaining tension and using characterization to give resonance to the story. The cast is small but well assembled. Jodie Foster brought a mix of vulnerability & tenacity to the lead role while 12-year old Kristen Stewart held her own in her first major film role. The trio of thieves are played by Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto and Dwight Yoakam - an interesting combination, to say the least.Of course, being a David Fincher film, the visuals are consistently attractive and the direction is rock solid. The movie's simplicity harks back to high concept thrillers of years gone by. One might even call the direction Hitchcockian.Ultimately, "Panic Room" is a well executed thriller but I feel that it's a bit conventional in comparison to Fincher's other thrillers that are more representative of his trademark style. Nevertheless, it's hard to argue against a thriller that's as skillfully constructed as this one is.
