what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

It was quite a very sad film, I felt so sorry for Bree that she wasn't accepted by her family in the first place and having realised she had a troubled son. I understand that Toby was angry at his dad for not telling him the truth about why she got him out of jail but he had no right to punch her. I would absolutely shake him to hell in order for him to wake up because she was his dad after all! This movie really does a good intake of being a transsexual and how you deal with it. The character Bree in my opinion really did a good example of herself on showing off and being brave who she truly is! She really doesn't stand any messing! I honestly wish herself and that singing cowboy Calvin were together. I mean, they literally locked eyes when they first met and even when they had said goodbye, they looked inseparable together! Now why no happily there? It's a good movie I have to admit regardless!

I regret that I came across this gem late. It is an fascinating road trip movie that has some of the most original characters I've seen in a long time. Felicity Huffman's portrayal of main character is amazing. Simply put...amazing. It skates the line between male/female so fine, you are absorbed by her characterization of Bree/Stanley over anything else. Whatever award that was sift by her, is well deserved. The performance all around is great. What is even more attention grabbing, is that it isn't preachy. It doesn't give you the wrong of right of whether the decision that she needs to make is political. It's not. It's a choice. And at the point you think it's about to get overly maudlin, it pulls back to comedy. A joy of a movie to watch.

11125802 The film TransAmerica focuses on many aspects of sexuality and transgenderism. The director, Duncan Tucker, and Felicity Huffman, who plays Bree, do an excellent job of portraying gender as a performance. Bree is diagnosed with gender dysphoria, which involves a mismatch between biological sex and perceived gender. Gender is expressed through gender roles, which are defined by society as being "masculine" or "feminine". Bree grew up as Stanley, and although this time is not shown in the film, one can assume that she conformed to the stereotypical male gender roles for Stanley. This is to be expected because Bree is constantly very concerned about how people are viewing her, and this suggests that she has always been conscious of the gender roles required of her. Therefore, Bree needs to relearn a new gender role when she begins her transition. As Bree is transitioning, it is evident that she puts great effort into appearing outwardly feminine. She wears long skirts in pastel colours such as pink and purple, and takes pleasure in applying quite a lot of make up. She is always very deliberate in her movements; she takes care to cross her legs in a "feminine" way and seems to be very concerned with how she places her hands. Throughout the film, it is obvious that she is trying to appear delicate and feminine. It is possible that she is overcompensating with this gender performance. She is insecure and doesn't feel confident in her role as a pre-operative transgendered woman, and being overly-feminine helps her avoid the fear of judgment or persecution. Transamerica questions social norms of gender expression and sexuality, and it is a thought-provoking film that is definitely worth watching.

I usually avoid Transsexual movies as they make me uncomfortable ! That's why I avoided the movie "Transamerica" when it came out . But being a movie fan I kept reading reviews that were saying how great the movie was and how great the actors were . So I finally rented the movie in 2011 and viewed it for the first time . I had seen 'The Angry Inch' and it did nothing for me . Then I saw "A Soldiers Girl" and that movie stuck with me but it was violent . Then I viewed Transamerica and was at last entertained . Felicity Huffman , was an Oscar's performance to say the least and she did win that award . She was amazing and I do not think a male playing the role could have carried it off as well . All the actors were 100 percent human and able to reach the audience ! Kevin Segers is a bright spot in the movie as Toby , Bree's son that she did not know she had. Kevin's performance was nothing short of Oscar material , which he should have won something . There are a lot of great up and coming actors from Canada . And if it were not for the Canadians we would not have movies like this , and "The Barbarian Invasion''s . Hollywood just cannot come out of the closet long enough to make a movie in this genre , let alone in off the wall subjects. I gave this welcome flick 8 stars out of 10 . ciao yaaah69
