This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Blistering performances.
So I enjoyed the first two Austin Powers films. The satire and ridiculousness of them really set the tone. However, this film takes a major step back, recycling the same jokes from the previous films and going overboard. They bring in Michael Caine as Austin's father, who I feel is completely wasted in the role. He is so much better than this. They also bring in Beyoncé as the token female companion as well as a tonne of A-listers in brief cameos. I tell ya, the pay must have been good.I rewatched this film again recently. I didn't laugh once. Myers' technique of trying to overplay his already established jokes while hamming it up to 11 really backfires here and it kinda made me cringe, to be perfectly honest. Also Myers takes the role of ANOTHER supporting character bringing his character roster in this series up to four. Goldmember, a Dutch crook with the love of gold, is possibly one of the most unnecessary characters in the film, which is ironic because the film is named after him. It just gives Myers an excuse to have a go at a pathetic Dutch accent. There was really no point for this film to be made, apart from Myers to expand his ego. The humour really wears thin and you kinda wish the film would end sooner, which is never a good sign. They did the parody well in the first two films but this film is a clear indication that they should have just left it at two.
Goldmember completes the Austin Powers franchise with little more than a nod to the 1st and 2nd films. The story's recycled again, Dr. Evil (Myers) insists on world domination, Austin Powers (Myers) awkwardly saves the day. It's not rocket science. Myers is up to his usual tricks; Evil garners the most laughs and Powers is, well, Powers. Mini Me gets the discriminated, but they're still just as funny. The 3rd installment sees two new inclusions, Beyonce Knowles's Bond-esque girl Foxxy Cleopatra, who lacks the emotional pull that Heather Graham had, and Michael Caine as Austin Powers' father, Nigel Powers, who fits his role suitably. Myers' Goldmember and the returning Fat Bastard fair less better. Still, Myers carries on doing what he does best, and that's making (most) viewers laugh.Check out my other reviews on http://straighttelling.co.uk
Having recently revisited the Austin Powers franchise, it was abundantly clear within 10 minutes that this 3rd offering was not up to par. In fact, I would go as far as to say this instalment was a mistake by all involved. Here are some reasons that stand out: 1) Poorly recycled jokes from the previous films at nearly every opportunity. I get they were trying to tie them together in an attempt to make it funny, but it just highlighted how they had run out of good ideas.2) The Fat Bastard cameos were neither welcome nor warranted. The character was best left as he was and the attempts to 'humanise' him fell flat. The film did not need him.3) Goldmember was not a good new character.Poorly thought out.4) The 'mole' incident was excruciating and went on too long, and shouldn't have happened multiple times! 5) Mini Me changing sides, and dressing up as Austin was rather annoying.6) They ran out of ideas for Scott Evil and so by making him evil ruined his character. The lasting image of him doing 'the laugh' sums this up.7) The 70'sish scenes were too over the top, even for a film like this, and didn't feel as believable or as fun as the 60's from the first films.8) I know that these films were never meant to be plot driven, but the previous two flowed better and were not just about the gags. This 1 felt like it ditched the story somewhat to focus on an all out assault.9) The 'Just the Two of Us' scene from 'The Spy Who Shagged Me' was fun and surprising, and felt natural. The follow up here of 'Hard Knock Life' was exactly the opposite, considering they were in a prison. It felt forced and was overly annoying.10) Beyonce's character added little to the film beyond adding clichéd 70'sness.11) Michael Caine?! Michael Caine as Austin's dad was pointless and didn't need to be there. His character was completely unnecessary.12) The cameos were far too excessive and only to show off who they could fit into the film. They didn't fit nicely with the film.13) The 'Silence of The Lambs' parody was AWFUL! Rant over! At least I had more fun writing that than I did watching this film.I heard there was talks of a 4th film but this may or may not ever happen. If it did I still have enough respect for the franchise to check it out. However, this was a complete mess, and if it was anything like this then it will be ruined forever.
Surprisingly, this was my favorite Austin Powers movie out of the series while it seems to be the least favorite of everyone else. Many of the jokes are rehashed, and while funny, were still not as funny as the first time they are used. Despite this, I feel this movie came up with a decent amount of new jokes and stupid circumstances which I thought were incredibly hilarious. The acting was once again good enough for what the movie achieved.I think that this was a fitting end for the conclusion of the series. The jokes about Austin Powers are definitely reaching their end, but I think that this series gave enough good laughs for it to be worthy to watch by someone who hasn't seen it before.
