Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
I enjoy movies where it takes a while to figure out what is going on. I thought this was one of those movies so I was enjoying the tease and the wonder of what was happening. In the end they explain nothing. I'd give it 2 stars for plot and writing but I bump it to 5 stars for the interesting visuals.
The worst part about the movie, isn't the incredibly slow scenes.. where you are shouting at the film "OKAY I GET IT!! MOVE ON!!" It's that you WANT to watch the actual movie!! It's like you're waiting on the film to start and it never truly does. Instead you are stuck staring at clouds and listening to piano music. Is the music pretty? Yes. But am I watching this film FOR the music? No. I want to see some aliens. I want to see more of the story. I don't need bombs exploding to get my attention, but I DO need more than the same scene repeated over and over.. and over.. and over. I mean- essentially we just stare at ScarJo's body and face the entire time with no real progression to the story line. That's not a problem, because she is beautiful.. right? It's really low hanging fruit to just have naked people in a movie for the sake of having naked people in a movie. I assume anyone watching this movie and "LOVING" it.. just really loves to see some boobies/booties and everything in between. And everyone else is trying to just be as pretentious as the director. I have seen art in movies.. and real, *moving* music paired with really emotional scenes. This was just.. so boring. So .. so boring. I found myself wanting to open my tablet and check my email.. go make another coffee. It could not hold my attention and I usually love indie films. This one just did not do it for me.
That is how long it took me to turn this movie off. Not a single word muttered in the first fifteen minutes. I was wondering when Charlie Chaplan was going to appear or maybe a Groucho cameo. Extremely boring movie and you need subtitles even though they speak English.
Unless you've read the book, or at least a synopsis of it, there's no understanding that SJ is an alien until the ending. Even though the movie doesn't really follow the book you at least have answers to the questions: Who is she? Why did she take that woman's clothes? Why does she often look so confused? Why is she leading men into a black void? What happened to the guy in suspension when he popped out of his skin? What's the river of red and black flowing towards the red line in the void? Who's the guy on the motorcycle? I understand they wanted to strip the story down, but I think they went too far and stripped away too much of the actual plot. I like mind benders, but there still has to be a comprehensive story that allows the viewers to connect the dots along the way or at the end have an "a ha!" moment. If you have no knowledge of the book, the ending only reveals SJ is an alien, which is why she seems lost or confused by the world around her, and the men were taken for some alien reason. No other answers. That's it.
