It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.

This movie is the best version out there of "The Punisher." Believe it or not, Dolph Lundgren did a hell of a job on his character. Since Dolph's all about body count, Lou Goseph Jr. really balances out the acting and plot parts of this movie. While Tom Jane did alright on the modern version and war zone was really that, this one really portraits the true dark nature of Frank Castle and the demons and criminals he swore to fight after events in his life.Guns, knives, throwing stars, explosions, it's all here (well, as far as the explosions, at one point the Punisher is firing a grenade launcher, and the explosions seem less than spectacular, more flashy than boom boomy). Not only that but there's a good amount of karate. Lundgren, a former karate champion himself, performs most all of his own stunts, and there is almost no choreography within the marital arts scenes, as real artists were used, and training in stunt techniques. Does the film stay true to the original character portrayed in the comics? For the most part...some minor changes, along with a few major ones (he never dons a shirt emblazoned with a white skull on it). I think one of the main reasons this film was ill received is because comic fans are a particular picky lot, as they spend a lot of time getting to know these characters, and tend to have high expectations when someone adapts one of their favorite characters to the silver screen. The direction was pretty good in most areas, given that this was Goldblatt's second film, his first being the Joe Piscopo/Treat Williams cop flick Dead Heat (1988). Goldblatt has since returned to editing, which seems a much better fit for him. Gossett is fun to watch, but again, given the dialog, he is given some completely rotten lines, but he does seem to try to make the best of it, earning whatever he got for appearing in this film.Overall rating: 7 out of 10.

The Punisher(1989) Starring: Dolph Lundgren, Louis Gossett, Jr., Jeroen Krabbé, Kim Miyori, Bryan Marshall, Nancy Everhard, Barry Otto, Brian Rooney, Zoshka Mizak, Kenji Yamaki, Hirofumi Kanayama, Larry McCormick, Todd Boyce, Lani John Tupu, John Negroponte, and Christian Manon Directed By: Mark Goldblatt Review JUDGE, JURY, EXECUTIONER, ALL IN A DAY'S WORK This wasn't even a Punisher movie, not once throughout this whole generic boring action piece of garbage film did this feel like Punisher. The avenging angel of Marvel Comics fame comes brilliantly to life in this searing action-adventure thriller! Dolph Lundgren stars as Frank Castle, a veteran cop who loses his entire family to a mafia car bomb. Only his ex-partner believes Castle survived the blast to become THE PUNISHER ... a shadowy, invincible fighter against evil who lives for total revenge on his mob enemies. He isn't sporting the skull on his chest and for an 80's action film it's not as brutal as other 80's action films like Commando or First Blood. And the plot's just boring and we don't delve into Frank Castle as a character at all. The acting is lifeless, like a decaying tree with some low budget standard effects. You'd think that in an 80's action film about one of the most violent crime fighter's in comics it would be more fun, but it's no fun at all. I've seen all three Punisher movies now and personally give Thomas Jaynes any day. I'm giving this Punisher a one out of five.

Oh my god in Haiti this is like the perfect storm of Dolph, dolphins, dead bodies and Daniel-Day Lewis. Here we have a comic book character Come To Life and Leap Off The Screan. There are Ninjas. There are Nives. There are people who Explode. There is a boat. When the world spun into existence, this is the reason, the culmination of all things, this is Dolph playing The Punisher. If ever there was a reason to buy a VHS tape of a movie off a junky hobo for 2 dollars this is it. This is it.Apples/Orangines

Deciding at long last to try their hand at theatrical superhero movies (Howard the Duck doesn't count) Marvel Comics decided to licence The Punisher, one of their grittier properties, to a production and distribution company named New World Films who went on to make Felix the Cat: The Movie. Get out from under the bed. There are lots of things in this movie I like; the acting is good even among smaller characters, Lundgren swaps his usual charisma in for a broken protagonist who has filled the void in his life left by his dead family with a desire for brutal punishment against the guilty, though fans of Lundgren's charisma will get a little bit of it from time to time, the action in this movie is well choreographed, the camera-work is nice with long uninterrupted steady shots, the score is ominous and heavy, the story is also surprisingly well thought out with more grey characters then you'd think, my favourite aspect of the story is that the whole conflict is a result of the unexpected consequences of the Punisher's actions; his five year relentless killing spree has weakened the mafia enough to allow a greater menace to enter the fray, a situation to which there is no easy answer. Now this movie does have some problems; it's a tad goofy at times like the unnecessary comic relief sidekick who is pretty useless, the movie also feels a bit slow at times, it never stops completely but it feels like it moves slowly at times, and I would be loath to forget the horrendously awkward and outdated Japanese stereotypes. All in all this is a movie that barely qualifies as a superhero film but if you love gritty 80s action (The Exterminator, Cobra etc) then you'll like this movie, I'd at least give it a watch.
