Memorable, crazy movie
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
One of the most unique concept of all-times and everyone involved has to be commended for making it happen. The dogs' survival, the way they confront every situation and how they plan things leaves you between a smile and tears. It is a film that makes you ask yourself whether we as humans in general have been grateful enough for the kind of support and help we can get from some of the animals in our daily lives. In this film for example, the success of the mission as well as the survival from a certain death of that scientist was completely based on the sled dogs. None of it would have been possible without them. Of course it is a film after all, but it is still an example. In fact, the most intelligent part of the film was showing that the dogs were the main contributors in the mission anyway, which makes the viewers sympathise with them even more. One objection though is that the count of the number of days might have been over-stretched a bit. Showing that they had survived so many days just didn't seem right. So that could have been shown as fewer days than that. My objection could be completely pointless and baseless though if according to the experts dogs can indeed surive so long. But still, it didn't seem right to me and I just typed out things from my first impression, without studying whether they could survive for so long or not. I might study it some day though....Again, a brilliant film overall!
I just can not understand why there are not even more films like this out there. this is a perfect example of real location filming and not just filmed on a animated background. this is why I love this film more then some of the others that are out there. I would if I could watch this film all the time because it is so great. Another good thing about the film is the perfect accompanying soundtrack that comes with it. there is not a better film out there than this. this film for me is perfect for all ages. the thing that is even better is the fact it is also based on a real life event. just like another film I like that is animated called balto.
Frank Marshall's 'Eight Below's a complete delight. Based on the Japanese film 'Nankyoku Monogatari' (a film I really want to watch), this heartwarming (and at times heartbreaking tale) focuses on a team of sled dogs who are left to fend for themselves in the snowstorm of a harsh winter of Antarctica. I think the film would have worked better if it only focused on the dogs (after they're left behind) and their survival after they've been abandoned rather than on Jerry Shepard's determination to get back and rescue them, mainly because this latter portion isn't properly explored. However, the actors do a decent job. Paul Walker performs adequately. Jason Biggs provides some fine comic relief and Bruce Greenwood is okay. But, the best performance comes from the dogs (D.J., Timba, Troika, Noble, Flapjack, Dino, Sitka, Chase, Floyd, Ryan, Jasper and Lightning). Not only do they look adorable but credit must go to their trainers as well.In addition, the the Antarctica sequences are terrifically shot. The visuals are fascinating. The images of the dogs against the beauty and harshness of the landscape is stunningly captured. The instrumental score in these sequences is effective. In the end, 'Eight Below' is not only a story about survival but about sticking together as a team, all the way through it which, in the end, proved the key to their triumph. This is something many humans could learn from.
And this is supposed to be family entertainment? I do enjoy a good family movie once in a while. I enjoy them if they're entertaining to an adult mind, but with that being said the movie must also be entertaining to the kid in me.For children and animal lovers, this might have the same effect on you that the German movie Downfall had on me (I have called it on many notable occasions one of the most depressing movies ever made). This movie based on the trailers might seem like it was a movie where dogs get trapped in Antarctica and the owner will stop at nothing to get the dogs back. However the owner doesn't seem to really care about the 8 dogs that he left behind to freeze to death because he doesn't really do anything until the movie is almost over.So what we are left with are a bunch of dogs walking on the snow from scene to scene, dying. But because it's a kids film it should have a happy ending (no matter which country it's from). This "happy ending" is that the owner finds only 2 dogs (one of them without the strength to stand) and the attitude seems to be "okay, that's good enough for me". Does this sound like family entertainment? Now this movie in the slightest did not make me sad (unlike what I maybe leaning towards when I said that children and animal lovers might find this movie depressing). All that it did make me feel is the need to ask the person I rented this from his definition of "family entertainment" because this isn't for the family nor is it entertaining.
