Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

This film has beautiful cinematography, engaging characters and some solid performances. The plot, based on true events was worthy of a film and the high budget scenes were impressive. On the downside, the big finale battle scene was logistically unbelievable unless the Soviets were firing blanks and the Mujahideen were superhuman. A little budget spent on more extras or some CGI would have made the weight of numbers feel believable. Also, the film could easily have lost 40 minutes to the cutting room floor and been better for it. There were some memorable and convincing scenes here but too much chaff for the wheat. Worth a watch for some insight on that campaign but don't expect Band of Brothers

This movie doesn't miss a thing it shows their training very explicitly and it shows pretty much their entire stay in Afghanistan. This is up in my top 10 favorite war films for sure and maybe top 5. The action is absolutely amazing, adrenaline pumping, and breathtaking. I really didn't like people who didn't like this movie because it was "boring". The first time I saw this movie was in Russian without any English at all. I had o watch it and understand it by its actions. Then a week later i bought it on DVD with English dubbed language and i have to say it was leagues better (obviously) but eve. Without my language the movie was epic.A lot of people who found it boring confuse me, if you were action hungry believe me the last 40 minutes to an hour will stuff you to maximum capacity with action. I didn't find it boring but thats just me. In many peoples eyes this is probably a must see.

impressive ? realistic ? sad ? heroic ? off course. but more that. a tale about few people in womb of a war. every war. a testimony about fear, courage, beauty, resistance and moral victory. about death, hope and life. nothing new. except the science to present the truth out of masks. because the purpose is not propaganda or incrimination of a regime. it is not a legend about brave men. it is a slice of life. profound, cold, far from pathetic formulas. it is not a history lesson. only a way to discover crumbs of a world. it is not Hollywood blockbuster in Manichean sauce. it is a Russian story with universal root. it is not a parable. only a form to understand price of things. fundamental things. it is. and it is enough. because the ash of final taste has not place in any definition.

It's one of the best Russian movies about the war!The movie is great,it breaks all records in Russia.It became the most popular movie in Russia ever!!!I mean it has collected more than 20 millions$ in just 2 weeks.And there is a good sign that it will approach 30 millions$ or even more!!!Definitely this movie will go down in History!The shooting was perfect,it was very well done.Actors play is honest,vivid,sincere and touching.What strikes me most is the realism of this movie.Actors portray their characters as realistic as it possible.They perfectly manage to show us the real war atmosphere with all its horror and brutality. So if you want to see a real war movie,with a real war actions, you must see it!!!!I give all my respect to the creators of this fantastic movie and wish it could climb over 40 millions$ because this movie deserves it,it made a big stir in Russia and i wish it will be soon recognized and respectively appreciated in other countries.The point of this movie is not to show the audience the power a heroism of Russian army,but to make people realize what a terrible consequences may the war lead to,and what it can turn into people life's.This movie simply demonstrates us the inanity and bloodiness of the war.
