I love this movie so much
Such a frustrating disappointment
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
Broken Arrow is a big budget blockbuster film from John Woo starring John Travolta and Christian Slater who are pilots assigned to carry a nuclear weapon when Travolta decides to go rogue. Travolta excels as the bad guy(as also seen in Face Off) and the scenes are over the top in typical Woo fashion. Set pieces aside this is a rudimentary action film one can watch with a few friends.
Hong Kong action maestro John Woo's most bland of American action films. It's not a bad action flick and is actually better than most, but it's a pretty dull script about corrupt US military man John Travolta trying to steal a nuclear warhead and his subordinate, Christian Slater, trying to stop him with the help of a plucky park ranger, Samantha Mathis, which make me want to consider this film a sequel to "Pump Up the Volume." The action is decent and there are Woo trademarks like two gun, Mexican standoffs, enemies back-to-back on opposite sides of a wall, etc. but it feels like he's just going through the motions. The studio supposedly heavily re-cut the film and maybe there exists a director's cut that's much better. Disappointing for a John Woo film, but satisfying enough by Hollywood action film standards.
Plot: Terrorists steal nuclear warheads from the U.S. military but don't count on a pilot and park ranger spoiling their plans. This is another movie that I don't get why people hate on it. This is the movie that introduced me to John Woo and got me into his filmography. Travolta is having a lot of fun as Deakins, Slater is very good as Hale who tries to stop Travolta from detonating the nuclear weapons. The supporting cast does a good job balancing the tone of the film with Samantha Mathis, Delroy Lindo, and Howie Long being the standouts. This has the best action of any of the John Woo films(yes, this beats Face/Off in my opinion). Woo is a master of action and uses it extremely well. This film also has one of my favorite action scores of all time by Hans Zimmer who captures the tone of the film beautifully.I personally feel this deserves the attention that Face/Off gets because this is more fun, but that's my opinion. If you've never seen this film I strongly recommend watching this if you want to watch a good popcorn flick.
Sure it's a ridiculous movie and has some laughable dialogue with some really cheesy moments. But for a action movie from the 90's, I give this movie a pass. Despite all the flaws and ridiculous aspect of this film, it's still a pretty enjoyable popcorn flick. With some good action set pieces and gunplay. Plus it was entertaining to watch playing the charismatic psycho villain. His agenda and motives aren't very clear, but he was fun to watch. In a movie like this going a bit overboard isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sure the action sequences maybe a bit outdated but it's still passable. Overall this is still a fun popcorn flick despite it's flaws.6.5/10
