Absolutely the worst movie.
This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
The first must-see film of the year.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
If you're a teenager that suffers from depression or other mental health illnesses, watch this first. 'It's Kind of a Funny Story' taught me a lot.1. There doesn't have to be a massive reason for someone to feel depressed or even suicidal. I'm looking at you, 13 Reasons Why. You can have the most normal life with nothing going wrong and still fall into depression. 2. If you think you may be suffering, you get help. Craig does exactly that, and for that I would consider him a role model for teenagers going through the same thing.3. Your true friends may come from unexpected places. For Craig, that place was a mental health ward. As quirky as the setting is, it is amazing for him to realise that the people that will change his life aren't necessarily the ones who are accepted by society.4. Sometimes, a change of scenery helps. For Craig, school was a high pressure environment where he felt that he was about to implode. In the ward, he found peace, unlocked his creative potential and managed to understand what the right direction for him is.5. Follow your own direction. Think about your strengths and happiness over what is supposedly the 'correct' road. Focus on your mental health first.6. Be kind to others, and you will be rewarded with friendship.I took one mark off because at times it felt too 'neat' and because it was packaged as a rom-com, but other It is an important movie, but I feel as if many people have not noticed it yet. This is my first review on IMDb and I highly recommend it.
ah ! i am in pain after trying to watch this movie to the end but i could not . i am suffering . this is one of the dumbest movie of all time . i tried hard but could not finish watching it . i cant even describe the stupidity of this movie . how could they include this garbage in COMEDY genre , there should be a new genre TORTURE OF AUDIENCE for movies like this . watch the ceiling fan and you will get more entertainment than this movie.
What makes this film not as good as it could have been is not necessarily the writing or directing but the lead actor portraying the character of Craig (Keir Gilchrist). Within the first few scenes, the audience understands he is going with problems and is shown as depressed but we are also noticing his behavior towards his family and friends, and he comes off as completely unlikable. In films such as this where we are meant to root for the lead character (specifically) because of his illness, it makes it more difficult since his character is not fully worth rooting for. Though as the film progresses, and Craig becomes settled in with his current situation, his tendencies become more likable.Easily what turns out to be the standout of the film is the performance and presence of Zach Galifianakis. His character is the most fascinated and we are sensed that there is something complicated and deliberate happening with his character. He appears to have the second most screen time, after Craig. His overall story seemed better than Craig's but unfortunately we are left with not as much as it could have been, as this film is completely centered around Craig. The supporting characters of Emma Roberts, and Viola Davis are there simply for support of Craig, as they are not given as much to do.Overall, It's Kind of a Funny story is not a bad film, but depends on the certain atmosphere and type of film one is intending in watching. The film quite feels more of a teenage Disney sitcom split into 4 episodes rather than one lengthy film. Having the film rated PG-13, the director and writer were most definitely held back. With an R rating, this film could have been more powerful, more impactful and possibly shown more depth in performances. They could have done wonders given this subject matter (perhaps a more depressing and different film) but one would think it would have been better. Think Brick or Charlie Bartlett.
this film trivializes depression to be little more than an illness which can be dealt with within the space of 5 days. this had so much potential and yet explored almost none of it. disappointing.the acting is clunky and Zach Galifianakis does not suit the role he plays at all.there are several clumsy attempts to make depression an 'everyday illness' by having the main character's friends allude to struggling with it which also detract from the legitimacy of the illness.overall, a very poor attempt to raise awareness about mental health - especially as many of the other mental health issues seen within the film are left largely unaddressed.
