Wonderful Movie
Overrated and overhyped
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
I abhor violence, but Rampage was one hell of a good movie, despite the subject being absolutely disturbing. I didn't like watching people getting gunned down, but it really hit home the social commentary Rampage tried to make, and it's a touchy subject that's been explored far too little. You can't tell the story of a lone gunman without it being in-your-face.I've never had a problem with Uwe Boll like most people. Sometimes he makes things I can't watch, but most of his movies I've watched I actually like. He thinks differently, which means you're going to get something different, and different to me is well worth investing the time into.Rampage is different, told very realistically, and has a lot to say about the world around you and I. Well done Uwe Boll, you've really (and I'm going to say this completely aware it's in bad taste) gunned down the critics with this one.
Let's face it - Uwe Boll has made some pretty bad movies in his career, like "House of the Dead" and "In The Name of the King". But in recent years the critical reaction to some of his movies like "Tunnel Rats" haven't been that bad. In fact, I thought "Assault on Wall Street", while not perfect, was okay. My reaction to that movie was why I decided to watch "Rampage", which shared the theme of someone reaching the breaking point and going on a rampage. After watching it, my feelings are mixed. To be sure, it's better than some other Boll movies. For one thing, the acting is surprisingly good, feeling natural and giving the scenes an almost documentary feeling. The movie wisely doesn't give us easy answers to why the main character does what he ultimately does, instead leaving us to determine why from some hints here and there. (Boll seems to be suggesting that rampages can't be easily explained, which I think is realistic.) And the rampage sequence, which takes up most of the running time, has some very effective moments. The violence does not feel fun, and is genuinely horrifying at time - which is how it should be. However, the movie is almost ruined by Boll's decision to use hand held cameras for the most part. That's doesn't automatically ruin things, but Boll has the camera operators CONSTANTLY bobbing the cameras greatly and zooming in and out to what is happening. Needless to say, this is greatly distracting. I think Boll was trying some kind of "cinema verite" atmosphere, but he went too far in this direction if you ask me. Another problem is that some of the characters are extremely stupid. When the rampage starts, people are too dumb to immediately get out of the area or even lock their doors. While I will admit that the movie has some genuine power, it also has some severe problems. Let's hope Boll learned from his mistakes in this movie and that the upcoming sequels are a significant improvement.
Rampage is another film from Uwe Boll (which is considered one of his only good films). Having seeing the film, I can say that I am not surprised at what I have seen, having reading several different reviews praising the film. Rampage is really a one man show starring Brendan Fletcher. He gives a subtle, quietly violent performance that is better than the material he is given so good for him. I think there is purposely a B-Movie element, a Grindhouse purpose behind this blood soaked film and if that was what Boll had in mind than the cast is ace.Rampage is a punch in the face, and the rampage itself is gratuitous with Boll shooting his subject in Cinéma vérité style(in other words, the camera shakes with Boll opting for the steadicam method). There were some key noticeable scenes, including Bill aiming fire and taking out many women in a beauty salon, one where he does the same in a Bingo parlor, and Bil getting revenge on a coffee store clerk who gave him the wrong order earlier in the film (really great scene). Overall, Rampage is predictable but has some moments, and I think it works because it isn't too long (only 85 minutes) so it doesn't feel like it drags on (such as Boll's In the Name of the King 1), and it isn't relied on bad costumes and visuals. We have noticed that Uwe Boll has a Rampage 2 set up later in the year, so we can find out if that happens to be a fluke.
I've read the criticisms of Uwe Boll, heck I've seen House of the Dead and it was brutally bad. This movie, on the other hand, was all too good. Uwe Boll shoots and scores on this movie.I'm not a camera guru, but the movie is shot with a home video feel to it. The picture was a touch grainy and not all that crisp like you'd expect from a feature film. That didn't detract from the movie at all.Rampage is, unfortunately, a very familiar story in this day and age. From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Sandy Hook and, as of a few weeks ago, Isla Vista, and as of a few days ago, Seattle. A young man, just out of high school, is fed up with his life and people in general. So, he deals with it the way some young people have decided to do in recent history; he goes on a shooting spree. The movie does a brilliant job to tear at you much like the movie Falling Down. In other words, in no way would the average person condone random killings, but you are shown the frustrating events that occur to the young man to put him in a violent frame of mind. Ultimately, you can draw your own conclusions about the young man. Maybe some are enthralled by his actions while I know many would be absolutely mortified by his actions. The excellence of this movie was in the developing of this young man/monster.
