The movie fluctuates its tone repeatedly, going from a gritty cop redemption tale and shifting gears into a mismatched buddy cop movie. The antagonists of New Police Story are a team of teenagers who at some points are presented like ingenious super-villains, then at other points like just stupid meandering kids. The problem is there are some incredibly unbelievable moments sprinkled-in which dissolve the impact of realistic and emotionally heavy scenes. To clear my perspective up, I do mean unrealistic within the realm Hong Kong standards. The original trilogy of Police Story movies felt balanced with the inclusion of comic relief, although for New Police Story the material at hand may be set-up too serious for such classic Jackie Chan antics. The whole warehouse scene for example was handled in the style of a cartoon. Considering how tragic the events that unfolded there were, I felt it very bizarre the antagonists were treated like comical super-villains. There is atrocious product placement in here as well, the worst offender being Lego which shows up abruptly, misplaced, and for too long. In all honesty I am nitpicking though, the movie is an extremely fun ride it's just too reminiscent of a careless Hollywood blockbuster than akin to a Hong Kong feature of this genre. The stunt work is absolutely top-notch, with many eye-popping moments that Jackie and his team are known for. The action sequences are especially well done and authentic to the original Police story Series, a must watch if only to see Mr. Chan do what he does best. Once again although New Police Story is a very fun ride, there are many elements which feel as if they either don't fit or don't belong. -6/10

New Police Story definitely took me by surprise. Gone are the days of HK Jackie classics like Armour of God, Drunken Master, or the Police Story trilogy. I am reminded of the pain and bewilderment of his later films such as The Medallion, The Myth, and (shudder!) the Forbidden Kingdom.NPS is a good mix of story, suspense, and plenty of action; action mixed with gunplay and martial arts. Actually, the action scenes were reminiscent of those from the earlier Police Stories with high octane charge laced with a modern twist. I must admit whether Jackie had done his own stunts here as there are some really creative scenes (the end credits proved that he did). A dark tone lies throughout the film which fits well with what Inspector Chan has to deal with. Plus, credit to Anthony Pun's cinematography which captures some really great shots of modern Hong Kong (both day and night).I would've rated NPS excellent except for the overdramatics in the film. Kudos to Jackie for stretching out here, but the tears were flowing like the Yangtze! Although this did not detract much from the movie, I can see how certain scenes may have required emotional outbursts. More bullets, flying kicks, and punches for me and thankfully, NPS provides a plethora of them.

I am a film critic that dislikes writing bad reviews. But i feel especially dishonored in writing this review, as it stars my favorite actor - Jackie Chan. Don't get this wrong, I'm not just disappointed in seeing my man Jackie in a bad movie(The Medallion and The Tuxedo weren't impressive) this is a critical and honest review. The film tries to be dramatic, without having any idea what message it's trying to convey, it's slow paced and the action scenes were filmed half-heartedly. The movie seems to portray Police officers as either cowardice, bullying, incompetent, corrupt and - or - moving targets. The villains are a group of rich, bored, thrill-seeking youths who commit high-stakes robberies and shoot cops as part of a game. The more cops the 'players' shoot, the more points they earn at the end. Sophisticated entertainment? Not only are their actions glorified (at least to some extent), attempts are made towards the end to draw sympathy to these sociopaths, on the grounds that their parents misunderstood them. This is an offense to the HKPD, surely? The director has no understanding of the audience, nor the slightest clue of how to film action scenes. It was once fun to watch Jackie ride on top of a bus as it drives out of control through the streets, or him tear through a shopping centre, but it came off bland. The authenticity of the death-defying stunts seen in other HK flicks, (Who Am I? being a noble example) was just not there. The majority of the movie captures him weeping over the death of his teammates, with one terrible instance where he falls on his knees in true melodramatic-opera style, in the middle of a fight scene. This is not the hero his fans have, for so long, been devoted to. In fact I objected to the very casting of Jackie Chan for I would have otherwise not bothered seeing it. The fights mostly involved guns, and the single bout that was worth any merit could have easily been executed by any dozen of cinema's rising martial-art stars. Having said this much, I should mention that this movie is part of an old franchise, as the 'new' bit in the title suggests. Yet whilst I enjoyed Rocky 6 and Die Hard 4.0 this series-reboot fails. Firstly, the Jcakie character in the earlier Police Storys' was a loose cannon and short-tempered, your old fashioned "it's not over 'til it's over" guy. Where the hell was he? I was first convinced the English-speaking distributors simply borrowed the title so that it would be familiar to the West, but I checked it out - it was actually intended as a Police Story sequel. What a waste. It seems they gave the production to a director who knew nothing about Police Story or Jackie Chan, disliked cops, and gave him a low budget. The film is ridiculously slow-paced for a police/action film, it milks dramatic scenes until it loses all impact, there is an absence humor, charm, and the exciting fight Jackie Chan is famed for. I really shouldn't judge Benny Chan, for this is the only film of his I've seen, but I can't help thinking it was all his fault. The heroes are dis-amiable and he seems to barrack for the bad guys the whole way through. The gang-leader continues to win up until the very end, he murders for sport, kills his lover instead of taking her to a hospital and shoots his friend in front of his parents. OK, I might as well give away the ending - the bad guy dies in a Police-Assisted Suicide, in slow-motion, as tears runs from his eyes (the same guy that laughed while he executed innocent people). After all this, the satisfaction of a good revenge-ending is robbed from us, as if Benny Chan expects the slightest show of sympathy to this mass-murderer. Before panning the film further, there is one thing I need to say. The pain Jackie displays (mentioned above) is genuine. But as he weeps on his knees in front of the camera, his fans understand - or at least I understood - that his character's failure to save his friends, is allegorical of the real Jackie's inability to live up to his glory days. Truly sad viewing, of a super-star's fading shine. PS don't watch this.

A return to great form or Jackie Chan, this is, aside from two WTF plot points 90 minutes in one of his best films. The film concerns Jackie Chan's inspector character, now a drunk. This is the result of run in with a gang of thieves who are more interested in killing and wounding police than actually robbing anything. Chan's team is lead into trap and only Chan survives. A year later a young brash cop arrives to say that he's Chan's new partner and they are going to go back to work on the case that killed his team. Reluctant at first, Chan eventually comes around and the pair are soon back on the trail.Bleaker and much more serious than most Jackie Chan films this is a movie thats clearly not for kids. Sure there are laughs but the violence, especially in the first half, is shocking. There is an edge to it all, people will not be alright, if the amount of blood is any indication. The action sequence are incredible and reminded me what can be done without CGI and rapid fire special effects. Its so nice to see real objects being swung about and smashed instead of what we get in Hollywood where everything is lets pretend. The problem with the film is a break down in the films internal logic. It happens twice in a short span and serves only to further the plot, but at the same time it doesn't make any sense. The problem occurs an hour and a half in when Chan and his partner are arrested (don't ask) which leads to the pair being confronted by the bad guys while they sit in their cell. Neither occurrence makes any sense what so ever, however it does direct things toward the final shoot out which does make sense.Absolutely worth seeing- for anyone who likes action or thrillers. Its a fine, though darker, return to form for Jackie Chan.
