This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
With actors like Julia Roberts & Tom Hanks, how can you not enjoy this movie? Larry Crowne gives the middle aged men a sense of hope. That going back to school to further your education for a better life is never too late. Julia Roberts plays that teacher you'd love to hate but love in the end because although lost in her own problems wants her students to succeed. I also liked the addition of actor Gugu Mbatha-Raw much because she brings a freshness or positive vibe needed to liven up the movie and she plays that role well. Last but definitely not least actors Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji even though they had brief roles to play it just adds another needed element to the movie to make it that much more of a delight to watch from beginning to end :)
Harmless comedy containing some humorous bits. I give it a "7" and am not panning it, but I might if I had not seen it last night on Netflix five years after its 2011 release. Frankly, we're today so "overly-movied" and thus to get an "A" it would take same talented actors and a "greatness element," whatever that magically means. I shall not bash as a "lame movie," but I didn't pay that usual $8--$12. So enjoy it on internet, because it's a triple but not a grand slam, while having plenty of moments. Obviously I'm not a professional critic, but try to find a Rex Reed hit piece, if he still does movie autopsies too, hint: an ancient if not elderly NY OBSERVER critic whom currently skewers the Broadway play WAITRESS. I feel bad for that play he reviews yesterday, even though I never go to plays myself, the probably last being circa 2003, not worth the $50 (whatever).
I adore this movie. While the Hanks' character is lovable (as many of his characters are ) there are plenty of interesting, vibrant characters in the mix. From the eccentric neighbor who runs a full time yard sale in his front yard-- to the free loving scooter chick that embraces Larry and shows him beautifully simple options to his current lifestyle. I think this movie shows how when life throws some unexpected horrible turns at you, what matters is how you handle the changes. Larry did not fight change, he opened himself up to change as a good thing and rolled with it. He did not fight for his job, he did not fight for his home. In the end, HE was better....HIS LIFE was better.
This is, at least for me, a perfect type of HBO movie, where I just viewed it. It isn't loaded with special effects and non-stop ridiculous violence, which may be why some of the reviewers hate it. Actually, not a whole lot happens in this story of Larry Crowne, a 50 yr old ex-Navy vet who has been laid off from his retail job and decides to go attend community college. (It is hard to believe he couldn't find another retail job, but we've got to get Tom Hanks in college) Larry does seem to really find himself in college and falls in love with with his speech teacher, Julia Roberts, who is in the process of splitting with her hubby,a frustrated writer who is obsessed with ladies with large boobs. That's about it, but it's only 98 minutes of time spent, Hanks and Roberts are pleasant to watch in the type of role they can do in their sleep. As I said, not a whole lot happens but that's somewhat similar to life most the time.
