Hoodwinked!

Little Red Riding Hood: A classic story, but there's more to every tale than meets the eye. Before you judge a book by its cover, you've got to flip through the pages. In the re-telling of this classic fable, the story begins at the end of the tale and winds its way back. Chief Grizzly and Detective Bill Stork investigate a domestic disturbance at Granny's cottage, involving a karate-kicking Red Riding Hood, a sarcastic wolf and an oafish Woodsman.

Too much of everything

I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

Hoodwinked! takes after Shrek. It's one of the earliest examples of digital computer animation. I will say that the animation kind of leaves you lacking, the look to the animation just isn't up to par in my opinion. But honestly that isn't the biggest most important thing here, it's definitely not the number one priority. The things that are more important is the writing, voicing of the characters, the wit and the entertainment value. The animation isn't atrocious, it's just you shouldn't go into this movie expecting like Pixar level animation. The entertainment value in this film is up to a high degree. It's pretty fast paced and it's about 1 hour and 20 minutes long. That runtime is perfect, it isn't too long or too slow. The characters are well developed, well, they're developed enough. The actors that voice the characters are well casted and they are each a good fit for their roles. The plot is told from different characters perspectives. The police interrogates the characters in order to get to the bottom of a crime and each characters vantage point brings a little something new to the story. Glenn Close voices Granny Pucket very well, couldn't have been a better choice for granny. Anne Hathaway was a very good fit to play Red. The writing is witty and clever and very funny at certain times. I think this is great choice for family viewing, it's not one of those run of the mill weak children's films, it's more cleverly written than that. 8/10 for Hoodwinked! Highly suggested.

Some people may consider the animation of this film old. However, I see it as a different kind of animation that that of Disney-Pixar titles. I think it was done purposely, to cleverly represent the vintage tale of "The Little Red Riding Hood." This film has a great many punchlines that will have you rolling laughing. The Film tells the different points of view of "The Little Red Riding Hood," from each of its characters, such as the Big Bad Wolf, Red Riding Hood, The Granny, and some weirdo with an ax. It has a lot of slapstick humor as well as a lot of conjured up, original humor laced into the story. This film can be enjoyed by both adults and children alike. I found it to be a lot better than I had thought it to be. I expected it to be lame and cliché. Well, shows you how much I judge a book by its cover. Give it a shot. I bet you'll appreciate the fact that you did. I would recommend this movie to those who are in the mood for parody animation.

Hoodwinked is a modern adaptation of the children's story "Little Red Riding Hood". Right into the first five minutes you can tell that this will be a dorky movie, but my god, this was terrible! And yes, I know it's a kid's movie, but was in grade seven, my sister in grade 5 and my brother in grade 1 when we all saw it, and we HATED it.Okay, where to begin? The bad singing got me the most, especially from the character of Red Puckett (Red Riding Hood) herself. The plot itself is as cheesy and dopey as a Precious Moments song. "Goody Bandit"? "Detective Nicky Flippers?" Do the animators think kids are morons, mindless zombies who will watch anything? And the horribly-scripted lines such as the grandmother's, "What up, my homies?" What the hell? I don't get it, was this movie supposed to be funny? Because it sure wasn't! I wouldn't watch it again unless you payed me, it was terrible!

I saw this film at the cinema when it was released in the UK in 2006 and I found it enjoyable on the whole, especially the story and the music. I've watched it at least twice more since then; once when I rented it and today when I now own the DVD (which I won online from Jambareeqi, an Internet star who reviews rare animated films on YouTube, including this one that wasn't his cup of tea). On my most recent viewing, the story was as good as I remembered but sadly the character animation wasn't.Starting with the animation, it was inconsistent in quality. The movements were decent half the time but the other half of the animation consisted of choppy, floaty and robotic movements. The same can be said for the character designs. The furry animal characters such as Wolf, Twitchy the Squirrel and Chief Grizzly were well-modelled but the human characters looked plasticky, particularly Red, Nicky Flippers and the woodsman, ugly (the children shown during the schnitzel song) and blocky (again the schnitzel children and the human competitors in the skiing contest). Nevertheless the characters were rich in colour as well as the detailed backgrounds. There are a couple of exciting sequences such as the ride through the mine shaft and Granny's snowboarding and it made sense that certain parts of the animation were repeated to show how well the stories from Red, Wolf, Granny and the woodsman intertwined with one another. Besides the animation quality, the other weakness with the film was its pacing. The part where the four main characters tell their sides of the story is quite rushed but the pacing drags on afterwards and the ending was abrupt. Further to the story, the other strengths were the witty and intelligent dialogue, the music (especially the songs by Red, Japeth the Goat and Boingo and the rock and rap songs over the end credits), the humour from Twitchy, the voice acting and the well-known cast including Anne Hathaway (Red), Patrick Warburton (Wolf), Glenn Close (Granny), Jim Belushi (the woodsman) rapper Xzibit (Chief Grizzly) and David Ogden Steirs (Nicky Flippers, also the voice of John Ratcliffe in Disney's Pocahontas films).Overall, 'Hoodwinked' is a new, engaging and thrilling take on the fairy tale that everyone knows and loves albeit its inconsistencies with its animation quality and pacing. 8/10.
