it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.

Maverick is a film that is based off the old 50's TV Show also starring James Garner, but in the titular role. I thought this film, while not very substantive, was quite fun to watch. This is an ideal escapist movie and it is clear that everyone had a good time making the film. The film is funny, has plenty of action, creates poker games that are fun to watch, and have brilliant movie/television references (ahem Lethal Weapon ahem). Richard Donner's film is about a man named Bret Maverick who is a gambler bent on conning people. He is on a mission to raise nearly three thousand dollars to enter a famous poker game. But many things get in his way such as a beautiful thief woman, some rattlesnakes, and some misfit Indians along with other scenarios. I thought the film was well-acted. Mel Gibson clearly had fun in his role and is less serious than many of his roles, even the Lethal Weapon series. Jodie Foster did a great job as Gibson's sidekick, and they had great interplay with each other. James Garner does a great job as the main lawmen and Alfred Molina as Gibson's main rival. Overall, Maverick is a stylish, entertaining movie that celebrates how over-the-top and giddy the film is. It is one of those films that has a goal to entertain and it succeeds by far. It is also a Western movie, and a fine one at that. This movie almost plays as a spoof of Lethal Weapon and James Bond, which is always good in my book.My Grade: A-

Plot: A card player in the Old West tries to win a cards tournament worth $250,000 but finds that someone is out to stop him.MAVERICK is a big screen adaptation of the old TV show about a gifted card player (and crook) in the Wild West. After learning about the tournament Maverick has to raise the $25,000 entrance fee, which is what he spends most of the movie doing. He finds himself chased by villains, hunted as human prey by a mad Russian noble and alternately assisted and hindered by a female grifter and a leathery old lawman. He also meets a bunch of post-modern Indians but the jokes are pretty thin and it only serves to pad the movie out far beyond what it ought to have been. The leads are good, the script fun and the direction competent yet the film never quite suckers you in. There are enough fights (OK), plot twists (a goodie at the end) and jokes to keep you going but it doesn't lift off and a good half-hour ought to have been left on the cutting room floor.

'Maverick', directed by the legendary Richard Donner, is a genuinely entertaining film, that also manages some good laughs in the goings-on. The film is stylishly directed, wonderfully photographed & features a Fabulous performance by cult actor, Mel Gibson. Set in the American Old West, Gibson stars as Bret Maverick, a wisecracking gambler, on the way to a major five-card draw poker tournament. But on his way to reach his destination, he is faced by a women thief, a villain who wants to track him down & a legendary lawman. Based on the 1950s television series of the same name, created by Roy Huggins, 'Maverick' turns out to be Good Fun. The Screenplay is well-written and packs in several interesting moments. The Witty One-Liners, are hilarious and keep your interest alive. Donner's direction, like always, is effective. He has directed the Grand Climax, with style. Cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond, is wonderful. Editing is sharp. Costume Design is pitch-perfect. Performance-Wise: Gibson, as mentioned, delivers a Fabulous performance as Maverick. He gets his comic timing spot-on and plays his part with rare ease. Jodie Foster is efficient, as expected. James Garner is top-notch. Alfred Molina & Graham Greene are decent. James Coburn is terrific in a brief, yet substantial role. On the whole, 'Maverick' is an entertaining film, that is definitely worth a watch. Thumbs Up!

This movie was a rather good western movie, a genre that I am not the biggest fan of. Granted, in the case of this movie it is more of a comedy so that helps this one rise above the typical western movie in my eyes. So does the cast as you get Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, and Alfred Molina as well as veteran actors James Garner (who played Maverick on the television show) and James Coburn. The story has Maverick in the middle of a rather unpleasant situation, you get to see what led to that as the movie unfolds to show you how he got there and then proceeds to show what happens afterward. Maverick is trying to raise the cash he needs to enter a huge poker tournament on a riverboat, but alas he is having a lot of difficulty. Not only does he have to deal with an over the line rival named Angel (Alfred Molina) he also has to worry about a nice gal that seems to have taken a liken to him, or the fact that she can dupe him at almost any turn. There are also thieves to contend with as Maverick gets tricked into lending a helping hand and mad crazed Indians as well. All this before he gets into the tournament where there are so many double crosses it gets rather funny. So yes, this one was really funny and it had its moments of action as well. It never, however, takes itself to seriously as the actors seem to really be having fun with their roles in this one.
