The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

One of the worst films I've ever seen. The acting was hammy and stilted, the plot and action scenes were amateurish and unbelievable. The cinematography tried to be arty farty and failed miserably. Avoid.

From what I've seen, this indeed is a good film to watch, I mean Mark dacascos definitely plays a good freeman in this film, the action was a solid B plus, and it had an amazing set of characters, but most importantly i like it for how it simply was more similar and more realistic to the anime itself then just creativity, usually copying story lines from something and owning it isn't good, but it's a good lesson to take and understand, for example, street fighter from 1994, a horrible way to influence people of the game, it was horrible, it didn't focus on ryu at all, the characters weren't the way the were, and the acting was horrible, Dragonball evolution, bad actor and no similar story, and I can't imagine what could happen if they even dare to make horrible films of bleach or naruto, so it's only fair, above all it is a very great film to watch and i praise it for that.

When I saw the trailer in the theater I was very impressed. At that time there wasn't much press about this movie. So for some reason I forgot about this and did not go to see it in the theater. Which after seeing this movie on video I regret deeply! Because this is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. The heroic bloodshed in the movie is equal to that of a John Woo movie. Mark Dacascos is excellent as "the crying freeman". Maybe the story is not really compelling. But the atmosphere in the movie is just right. From beginning to end you will be caught in an alternative reality which seems real enough. But throughout the story you realize that it is different from our world. Now realizing this movie is based on a manga comic it makes sense. Christophe Gans does such a perfect job that in my opinion he should make more live action adaptations of mangas. Because this one was magnificent!

Crying Freeman is based off a Manga and tells the tale of the Freeman, a tattooed assassin (played by Mark Dacascos) "brainwashed" to kill for a secret Chinese crime syndicate. And kill he does (often in slo-mo); he is skilled with guns, swords, and what have you! Anyway, in the opening double hit, a female (of course) artist is witness to the violent act. He lets her go, for now, but the rule is no one can see his face and live. He is sent back to snuff her out but as he waits in her house, he finds a painting of himself. He realizes that this woman is not a threat and in fact, has some kind of feelings for him. When she finally arrives, he cannot kill her. Now, in addition to the Mafia who want revenge for their two slain men, Freeman's own group decided he broke the rules and must die for it (after one last hit, of course). There are many more ins and outs to the story but I think you get the idea. There is a decent helping of good, violent action and this is probably the film's strong point. Still, the general atmosphere is monotone and the plot drags at times. If you can find a copy, it's worth viewing, I guess, but not for $25. Christophe Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf (also staring Dacascos) blows this out of the water. By the way, Freeman sheds a tear from time to time, hence the title. I forget what the exact reason was though…it's just his thing.
