I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

A sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his home world to Earth where he must stop an alien invader.Although several TV adaptations of Marvel characters had aired during the preceding 21 years, this was the first theatrically released feature film, coming after the serial "Captain America". Now, there is an interesting story about how and why that came together, and how this film indirectly created Pixar... but that is all history.I first saw this film as a child, maybe 12 years old, thanks to my babysitter. It stuck with me pretty well, as even now 25 years later there are scenes that are familiar and jokes that were lodged in my brain. This has "cult film" written all over it. Not good, not bad, but bad enough to be good in a bad way.

Much to my dismay, I watched this because of GOTG 2. I knew this was going to be garbage going in. But what gets me is how well produced this film is for something done in the 80s. You know what? I know what this film feels like. This film feels like something the current DC universe would put out. Totally well produced garbage. Neat special effects but with a story practically written in crayon and dumbed down for a fourth grade audience while having crude adult oriented sexuality just for the hell of it. But yeah, at least Marvel learned their lesson.

I remember hearing about this movie from my dad who said it was the worst superhero movie ever made. Well, he didn't use those exact words, but that's what he was heavily implying. It seems like most people agree with him. Well, maybe not the worst but certainly one of the worst. Maybe it's not technically a superhero movie, but at least a movie based on a Marvel comic book and part of the Marvel Universe, so I think it counts. Anyway, this is probably George Lucas' worst movie, although I don't know if he directly worked on the Star Wars Holiday Special.The worst thing about this movie is how predictable it is. I remember a scene where the police are talking about a manhunt for a duck and I knew that they'd make a joke about a duck hunt. Also, there's a scene where a police officer calls the guy Jack, and I knew he'd say not to call him Jack. Worse, I knew they'd show Howard faking being possessed. Well, the first time it looked like he died they didn't so I was glad they didn't use that cliché. Then it looked like he died again and they used it that time. The pacing is this film is terrible. It really is dreadfully boring. The fact that the first five minutes show a duck's naked breasts in a PG rated film makes you know it will be unwatchable.This happened to be the first theatrically released movie based on a Marvel comic and dang, has Marvel gone to infinity and back since then. There's a scene where Howard and his friend somehow know how to build a plane and fly it in this drawn out fifteen minute sequence that goes on forever. I'm surprised the Nostalgia Critic didn't make a joke about that. Speaking of which, I love his review of that and it has one of my favorite jokes from him. People in the movie say, "Dat's a duck!", "What is dat thing?", "Dat's a duck man!". This causes the Critic to say, "Dat's a duck!" (points to tie) "Dat's a tie!" (points to desk) "Dat's a desk!" (points to movie) "Dat's a dupid, dupid movie!". *

I saw this film when I was 13/ I wish they brought some characters from the comics. I wish they brought in doctor bong who had a crush on Beverly in high school. Wanda the girl with the lisp. the kidney lady who taunts Howard for smoking on the buss. this film is lacking many areas on the plus side it has a small role for pre21 jump street Holly Robinson. Lea Thompson played a good Beverly the duck costume needed to look like the duck in the comic. .The producers of the film should of consulted Steve Gerber Howard creator. I have issue numbers 2.6. 31 of the original comic a preview of the newer Howard the duck. I love Howard the duck people I know who are in to comics don't understand why I love Howard the duck this movie will never change their minds just reinforce what they think the duck is. maybe in the future Howard will appear in guardians of the galaxy and he pick up the duck comics and see them as I did years ago when I read them.
