Am i the only one who thinks........Average?
Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Yes, absolutely, there is fun to be had, as well as many, many things to go boom, all amid an atmospheric urban jungle.
TranceThe complexity can favour in on either side on such tales for either it can be convincing, exhilarating and thought provoking or can be all a hoax and luckily in here it works for the betterment of it. Danny Boyle is no short on execution as he delivers thoroughly but the "bad guy" in here is the script which fails to offer enough gravitas and development to the characters and rather focuses on seeking viewer's attention. James McAvoy is as always, amazing in his role and stays true to its character and is supported well enough by Rosaria Dawson and Vincent Cassel. Trance hits hard and fast from the first frame and tries to keep the urgency and tension alive between the characters which works for the most part of the feature considering its short runtime of around 100 minutes.
There is a disconnect between the gravity and violence of the events depicted and the sleek, shiny, over-stylish packaging. Moreover, the story is so complicated that it becomes difficult to understand. It is one thing to expect the viewer to pay attention, it is another to pour a bottle of champagne in the viewer and let him loose in a maze-shaped hall of mirrors. The story concerns the disappearance of an unusually ominous painting by Goya called "Witches in flight". There is a rich vein of symbolism here that might have been better mined than is the case. (But then, I suppose that the makers of the movie realized that the stark horror of the painting would not go well with the glossy, stylish look.) At one point in the movie - I'm trying to avoid spoilers - it becomes clear that the Goya has been kept hidden under tragic circumstances. These circumstances were also deeply deleterious to the painting. As a result one would expect the painting to be damaged, possibly even damaged beyond recognition. But no, it remains just as beautiful as ever. And to think that there are crown jewellers, art historians, restorers,... etc who would only approach such a masterwork according to a strict protocol. The fools !All of the above is pretty sad, since the movie also boasts some fine performances, especially from the two protagonists. There are also moments of whimsy and (very dry) wit. So. Did I ever tell you how I forgot my Rubens at the tobacconist's ?
I saw this was going to be on TV, great names involved. Vincent Cassell! Danny Boyle! how can it go wrong?Unfortunately, in many ways.It started well but halfway through I just wanted it to be over. Confusing plot, waste of talent, style over content.I was going to say that at least it is visually impressive. It has the gloss and pace of an ad for a shiny new car. 100 minutes of fast moving colourful camera work. 100 minutes too much.Very poor. Watch Crimson Rivers instead.
This was another great film from Danny Boyle! This is a heist movie, in a non-traditional way. There is a heist, but most of the movie revolves around trying to find out what happened to the painting after the heist. McAvoy, Cassel, and Dawson were all excellent in this. It is an exciting psychological thriller, with visually interesting film making throughout.I enjoyed the many twists and turns throughout this movie. I enjoyed McAvoy's performance in this quite a bit. I haven't seen anything he has been in since Wanted, so I forgot how good he was. He plays a man who works at a high end auction gallery. This is not a straight-forward heist movie, and that makes it that much more entertaining. It is a bit artsy with Danny Boyle's touch, but it is well done. There is some good action sequences, and the way it is shot makes you think about things a bit. I like how it is a bit confusing, then it becomes clearer and clearer as the movie goes on. It is has an excellent ending that was thrilling. Check it out if you are a fan of smart thrillers, or Danny Boyle. 8/10
