A Major Disappointment

It's one of the most original films you'll likely see all year, which, depending on your threshold for certifiably crazy storylines, could be a rewarding experience or one that frustrates you.

Lets get the easy part out of the way. This is a very entertaining, fun, film. The IMDb rating is much too low. I have seen this film 7 or 8 times and it just gets better.But this is the interesting part. Former model and TV character actor Geena Davis was a latecomer to Hollywood. She started doing films IN THE mid-80s and quickly became an A-list actress. And won an Oscar.However by the mid-90s, Ms. Davis was hitting 40 and she knew that part of her career was coming to an end, the part where she could carry a feature on her back alone, playing the love interest.This is the result. Although Shane Black gets the writing credit, word is that Davis herself pushed this project through, as an elegant goodbye to Hollywood. She essentially cast herself as an amnesiac 35 year old - mentioned in the opening voice over -- and did a great job. (She still does TV and voice acting.) It is a great film. It holds the attention. I agree with critics who call Jackson "the most overexposed man in Hollywood" but in 1996 he was reasonably fresh and could play the role effectively.And it contains one of the greatest lines in the history of film -- "CHEFS DO THAT!?"

As the art and craft of film making is family business for many people, there is nothing wrong in making a film with your wife in a leading role but it should make some sense.One is bound to fail if the film does not convey in a positive manner what it intends to show.On a global level this is a golden mantra for all talented directors. As a film which is short of intelligent ideas,'The Long Kiss Goodnight' leaves a lot to be desired. As the director and his team have not done enough research on Amnesia, Geena Davis as a fearless butt kicking spy is more convincing than a poor Amnesia victim whose past career involved spying for US government. The film also appears to be more of a comedy film with actor Samuel.L.Jackson mouthing countless stupidities. His character has been reduced to that of a third rate stooge. By today's standards,this film's action scenes are OK. In a broader perspective,they are an important relic of a period when many action oriented films were made in Hollywood.

Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson were on fire in this film. The premise was totally unbelievable: a small-town school teacher one minute and the next coolly declaring to an enemy ''You're gonna die screaming. I'm gonna watch.'' That was the story. Seven years of amnesia and now she is back to finish her job. There is more action in this film than in in any Bruce Willis action flick. Director Renny Harlin, who also directed Die Hard 2: Die Harder, learned and outdid himself. Jackson and Davis really meshed as co-stars and made the film that much more enjoyable. If you like you action fast and hot, then this is a not-to-be-missed adventure.

It was probably inspired by the movie "The long goodbye" by Robert Altman – Samuel L. Jackson is watching this movie in the hotel.The movie is very stupid at some places . How did the one-eyed prisoner escaped from the prison ? Plot hole. Why didn't he broke into Samantha's house or kill her with a sniper gun from the distance , while she was for example shopping ? The motivation for the main villains to do the bad things is ABSURD. Little girl hides in the worst place possible.The movie is also very cheesy and unrealistic sometimes . Samantha seems immune to pain , cold and has TOO MUCH STRENGTH. The assassination by the one-eyed guy is ridiculous , same as the flashbacks with Charlie. Oh , and the little girl is annoying.Thankfully there are some good things here. Geena Davis gives a good performance and is very convincing with both of her personalities. Samuel L. Jackson is fun as always and David Morse is solid as always. Renny Harlin always makes sure that his movies aren't boring and this is no exception. I guess he really put some effort to make this movie entertaining with his wife (Davis) as the main star. Shane Black , the writer of "Lethal weapon" provides us some incredibly funny moments and dialogues . Thanks to the humor watching this movie is rather painless. The scene "What I told you about smoking ?" is one of the funniest I've seen.It's not a good movie , but it's too good to be "so bad , it's good " type of movie. This is no "Bourne identity". It's cheesy and stupid , but thankfully there is a good ironic distance to the whole story . It doesn't take itself too seriously and if you lower your expectations you should have one night of mindless fun. It's certainly a better action movie with woman in main role than "Tomb raider". I give it 6/10.
