If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.

Take the claustrophobic atmosphere of Alien, the shape-shifting menace of The Thing, and combine it with the tension of underwater adventure The Abyss, and what do you get? The answer: something a whole lot better than Leviathan, which disappoints despite some incredible credentials. The excellent cast includes Peter Weller (RoboCop), Richard Crenna (Rambo), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), Meg Foster (They Live) and Daniel Stern (C.H.U.D.). The script is by David Webb Peoples (Blade Runner). The production design is by Ron Cobb (concept designer on Alien, Aliens and The Abyss). The monster effects are by the Stan Winston Studio (Predator). And the score is by Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen).Sadly, the director was George P. Cosmatos, who, despite being on a roll with Rambo: First Blood Part II and Cobra, was never on a par with Scott, Carpenter or Cameron, and proves unable to inject much life into proceedings. He takes an awfully long time to get to the monster, the first half of the film focusing on the mundane daily activities of his mining crew (a trick that Ridley Scott pulled off far better with Alien), but when he finally gets to the fun, the wait simply isn't worth it: the action lacks urgency and the creature proves extremely lacklustre, the final incarnation wisely kept to brief glimpses, mostly in the shadows. After lots of running through corridors with flamethrowers, the surviving few narrowly escape before the mining colony implodes, and are picked up on the surface by a passing Coastguard helicopter, but not before the film manages to rip-off Jaws for one more encounter with the monster.4.5 out of 10, rounded down to 4 for the shameless scares involving a face-hugger style crustacean, and for the untrustworthy character who is a blatant rip-off of Ash from Alien.

Leviathan (1989) is my personal favorite film it is an underrated creature film from the 80's starring Peter Weller (RoboCop) and directed by George P. Cosmatos who directed my all time favorite classic sequel Rambo: First Blood Part II and he later worked with Stallone again on Cobra (1986) my two favorite movies. So Leviathan become one of my all time favorite classic creature films and I love this movie to death! I wish they would make more movies like this to day and it is really a shame because special effects that time in the 80's were really good.Stan Winston's creations, while on a second-tier level to some of his other work, are still shudder-worthy. Jerry Goldsmith's score is quite effective and it provides more prestige than this B-movie probably deserves.Leviathan was worth the hassle of those repeat visits to the rental store. The movie transcends its derivative plot structure ("John Carpenter's The Thing wins an ocean vacation and pretends to be Ridley Scott's Alien.") A lot of people are complying that the movie was a rip off Ridley Scott's Alien and John Carpenter's The Thing I personally enjoy it every time I watch the movie. I had an identical experience with Leviathan's underwater monster counterpart The Abyss and DeepStar Six the movie I watched previous month and I thought the movie was a boring, lame a time waster and identical copy of this movie.Plot: Underwater deep-sea miners encounter a Soviet wreck and bring back a dangerous cargo to their base on the ocean floor with horrifying results. The crew of the mining base must fight to survive against a genetic mutation that hunts them down one by one.I love the cast, I love the set, production design, the story and the plot, the horror and action. I do enjoy the creature effects, a lot of people don't care about the creature effects, I disagree. The music score is beautiful, the film goes fast paced around, I am never bored with it. The acting from all the actors are good and enjoyable. All the people that were involved with this film are no longer with us anymore. R.I.P. George P. Cosmatos, Stan Winston, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Carmine and Richard Crenna. It is really a shame that they are no longer with us anymore. We have the cast that I love: Peter Weller (RoboCop 1, 2), Richard Crenna (Rambo Trilogy), Amanda Pays (The Flash), Daniel Stern (Home Alone 1, 2, Bushwhacked), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters 1,2), Lisa Eilbacher (Beverly Hills Cop), Hector Elizondo (Beverly Hills Cop III) and Meg Foster (They Live).Peter Weller is believable as the calm-mannered supervisor who must maintain a cool head while managing any potentially volatile problems with the crew in an enclosed location where the slightest mistake could have deadly consequences. Amanda Pays, who was the ultimate object of infatuation for nerdy guys like me who enjoyed the The Flash TV series in the 90's and I still do enjoy her in the new Flash, is gorgeous and cool in Leviathan as a mining operative who plans to begin astronaut training after her undersea duty, and this role cements my opinion of her as one of the top 10 most beautiful women of the 1980s. Richard Crenna, excels as the seemingly-shady doctor who, like Ash in Ridley Scott's Alien, may or may not have an agenda all his own. Ernie Hudson and Daniel Stern lend some needed personality and levity to the equation. Lisa Eilbacher is competent in her role that provides one of Leviathan's most unsettling moments.Leviathan is a 1989 Italian-American science fiction horror film directed by George P. Cosmatos and written by David Webb Peoples and Jeb Stuart.Such negatives are distracting. Your ability to ignore such distractions will ultimately determine if you give this a 5 or a 9. Were it a little more humane as it stands, I give it a 10 because It is one of my favorite movies and it is very underrated.

Plot: Underwater deep-sea miners encounter a Soviet wreck and bring back a dangerous cargo to their base on the ocean floor with horrifying results. The crew of the mining base must fight to survive against a genetic mutation that hunts them down one by one. This is one creature film that has been largely forgotten by people and that's sad in my opinion. This film knew what it was from the beginning and that's what these films should be unlike Sharknado which makes these films look like one big joke. Everybody in the cast does a great job especially Peter Weller, Ernie Hudson, and Amanda Pays. Each character is likable and you really feel that these are real people. I personally feel the creature effects are very good even if it is somewhat like the thing they at least try to be something different. I don't get why the effects guys trash them, I just don't get it, but that's their opinion so I can't change that. This film is one of the better creature films from the 80s that deserves to at least have some respect from certain film fans. It has a great cast, good creature effects, a solid script, and very good direction by George P. Cosmatos. When you get the chance to watch this film, watch it you won't regret it.

I liked this movie even though it got a lot of ideas from the movies Alien and The Thing. This movie is about underwater miners mining silver; and discover that a lethal life form gets aboard their ship. When " Sixpack"(Daniel Stern) and "Elizabeth"( Amanda Pays) get caught pulling pranks on the ship; "Beck"(Peter Weller) assigns them to work duty the next day. The next day the two are venturing out on the ocean floor, ready for work. When Sixpack and Liz discover a Russian Ship(Leviathan) they explore it. Sixpack finds this box and they both take it back to see what's inside. The crew is stunned and find a videotape of the Captains Log. On the video the Russian Capt.(Eugene Lipnski) is explaining that his crew is dying off, due to some deadly virus. When Beck and his crew finish watching the tape they are stunned, they believe the Leviathan was deliberately sunk. They think the remaining crew sunk it to save the rest of the crew; and possibly to keep their virus secret. When Sixpack hides a flask of vodka in his pants he as well as the rest of the crew are doomed.Sixpack and Liz drink from the flask and the next day Sixpack realizes he has caught some type of virus. He goes to see "DOC"(Richard Crenna). The virus starts to get so out of control it ends up killing Sixpack in 8 hours. The crew panics and when Liz finds out what happened to Sixpack and how it transforms him she kills herself. The virus lives in it's host for awhile then it kills them, consumes their intelligence; and starts to form into some type of monster. It knocks a majority of the crew, and after each kill become more intelligent. When Beck contacts "Ms Martin"( Meg Foster) she gives him some crap story for not rescuing them right away. She explains that a hurricane is coming and their trip to the surface is delayed. so for the next two days the remaining crew will have to fight for their lives against this life form in order to survive. In the end 3 members to escape, but two only make it all the way back. The ending is priceless, and somewhat the AHHHHH moment of the movie.Even though this movie is not an original I still like it. The story a simple one about big corporations that value profit over human life. Those that have worked for big companies in the past know what I am talking about. This movie has some known names in it and some I never heard of, still good acting from all. So if you like Alien or The Thing you should like this movie. It is one of the better Sci-fi/horror films from the 80's so give it a watch.
