Purely Joyful Movie!
Boring, over-political, tech fuzed mess
This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
I'd like to start with my biggest gripe - the ending of this film sucked beyond belief. You were told the ending right at the start with a flash cut in the opening credits. Then the little bit of an ending after the flash cut is just plain silly and badly placed. It would have been cool earlier and with more movement. I'm trying not to spoil the ending but the film would have been a million times better if the ending went further. The rest of the film was good and shocking. The story was copied but the script and direction as well as the stunning acting made up for the unoriginal plot. It is worth a watch so long as you know that the ending is going to be very disappointing. Some scenes are shocking and disturbing and the social aspect is very well told. Overall disappointing though.
A-Z Horror Movie of the Day..."May" (R - 2002 - US)Sub-Genre: Psycho/GoreMy Score: 7.8Cast=6 Acting=8 Plot=7 Ending=9 Story=8 Scare=8 Jump=6 F/X=8 Psycho=10 Gore=8A lonely young woman traumatized by a difficult childhood, and her increasingly desperate attempts to connect with the people around her."So, are we like best friends now that you've seen what's in my freezer?" She really pushed that Pretty to Crazy ratio to the limit!! It started off slow and was just plain weird. Once the case broke, so did May. It was at this point that the violence ensued and the movie hit a whole other level!! When you watch this one...just remember, If you can't find a friend, make one!!!
I have seen "May" about five times or so by now, and it is still as good as the first time I saw it. I found it by sheer random luck in the local secondhand DVD store. I bought it without knowing anything about it or the people starring in it.What makes "May" unique is the absurdly entertaining story, but also the entire cast. Especially Angela Bettis who performed the role of May to perfection. She was so well-cast for this role. Anna Farris also really performed quite well, and it was nice to see her out of the usual comedy genre that she is in.The story, shortly summarized, is about a socially inadequate loner named May, who falls in love with a guy she sees on the street, and she tries desperately to get his attention and affection by all means necessary."May" is both a story and character driven movie, and it is the type of story that creeps in under your skin and will stick with you. It has a good combination of drama, character acting, thrills and blood. Yes, there is blood!I can strongly recommend that you sit down to watch "May" if you haven't already seen it. It is one of those movies that is a surprise of a movie.
I guess if I had to sum up this movie in one word it would be "quirky". Angela Bettis plays May, an awkward and unassuming girl that doesn't quite process emotion like the rest of us. Her only solace as a child were her dolls, and this carries on into adulthood into an obsession over a living, breathing doll... OK- well, maybe not living... anymore. I love this movie, because even though May's childhood was so abstract, you could always find a commonality with her bizarre insecurities. Bettis even makes them charming in a sordid sort of way. Yes, this is a "horror" movie, but McKee adds a true story behind the plot rather than just killing for the sake of good old horror brutality. There are undertones of diverse sexuality edging on deviancy with her "doll", but one doesn't really stop and question this while viewing, but more so in retrospect. If you like chic horror and you haven't seen "May", then do yourself a favor and check it out.
