Tales from Earthsea

Something bizarre has come over the land. The kingdom is deteriorating. People are beginning to act strange... What's even more strange is that people are beginning to see dragons, which shouldn't enter the world of humans. Due to all these bizarre events, Ged, a wandering wizard, is investigating the cause. During his journey, he meets Prince Arren, a young distraught teenage boy. While Arren may look like a shy young teen, he has a severe dark side, which grants him strength, hatred, ruthlessness and has no mercy, especially when it comes to protecting Teru. For the witch Kumo this is a perfect opportunity. She can use the boy's "fears" against the very one who would help him, Ged.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

Tales from Earthsea is a film directed by Goro Miyazaki based on a book series by Ursula K. Le Guin and is about Arren who has run away from home after killing his father and stealing his sword. Arren soon runs into a man called Haitaka (Sparrowhawk) and they travel together and get themselves into trouble when they arrive at Hort Town. Now the reason that my description may have sounded vague is because, in truth, I have no idea what this movie was actually about. In the beginning they tell you that there is something strange happening, that livestock is dying and dragons are fighting and that something very ominous is taking place, but this ends up having nothing to do with the plot of the movie. Speaking of the plot, the movie, it doesn't make any sense there are a few things that happen in the movie that are never explained but definitely needed it. Besides it not making any sense it's just plain boring. Part of the reason for that is due to the poorly written characters which I cared nothing about. I'd say that the worst character in the entire film is the lead Arren. They put forth little to no effort in allowing the audience to understand or relate to him. I'd say the character they fleshed out the most was probably Theru, a young girl they meet about a quarter of the way through. They give her a backstory that helps you to understand why she acts the way she does but even she is still very flawed. On to the positives. This movie although not one of Ghibli's best looking films, has pretty great animation I'd say, except for the dragons which I thought looked to CGI heavy for a hand drawn animated feature (compare to Haku from Spirited Away). Another positive is the Score, which is very repetitive but, was well done and showed influences from Aladdin and other adventure movies such as Lawrence of Arabia.I thought that this movie would have benefited from an exploration of it's setting. Considering that it's a fantasy adventure movie they hardly go anywhere and the few fantasy elements there are, are hardly seen or even mentioned. For example this world has wizards and dragons but only at the very beginning and the end do you actually get to see any magic or dragons. In the end I think that compared to Ghibli's other work and especially to that of his father, Goro Miyazaki's Tales from Earthsea was a disappointment to say the least.

I really liked the film but I wouldn't consider this my favorite. The reason is because the storyline was lacking in most parts and the main villain looked more of a goth girl then an actual manic villain. Actually he looks so much like the singer Cher or even the Demon from Deathnote a bit haha! Seriously the drawers should've had more imagination then that! The soundtrack I think is the best throughout, its so medieval and interesting like. It reminds me of Game of Thrones but unfortunately the film didn't act as Game of Thrones otherwise I could've given it a 10 star. Its good anyway like I can listen to it all day long! The scenes where there is fields were very scenic and look very real. It made me feel like I wanna be in this film somehow except with all the violence and the enemies!

I was expecting this movie to be terrible after reading several comments suggesting this is the worst movie produced by Ghibli.Fortunately I was gladly surprised by the quality of the movie. I have not read the book series though. It is true that at times the movie tries to copy the same vibe of Mononoke (the soundtrack, the epic character of the movie, even Cob gets his hand chopped, something I have only seen once before in a Ghibli movie), but at the same time it has a totally different main plot (this does not try to deal with environmentalism but it kind of approaches our own limited existence). The end feels a bit rushed. I was utterly confused when Theru suddenly transforms into a dragon and then goes back to a girl (maybe I missed something), fortunately they wrap it up nicely at the end.Overall, I would recommend it. Very different from other Ghibli movies (not recommended for kids i guess), and not at the level of the best movies put by the studio, but this does not make it bad at all.

Tales from Earthsea was the first Ghibli movie to be directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki. It ended up being an alright (if somewhat pedestrian) movie, especially considering that Hayao did not consider Goro ready for the responsibility of directing a Ghibli feature film. The story follows a boy named Arren who killed his father and stole his sword. Arren ends up getting caught in the crossfire of an age-old war that had been going on between a powerful wizard and a powerful witch. The story more or less plods aimlessly along throughout the movie, especially so when compared to Hayao's masterpieces. This movie didn't even hit North America until 2011, and then only on DVD in spite of Disney's recent Bluray distribution craze, which kind of shows that even they acknowledge this movie's mediocrity. With that said, Tales from Earthsea is still worth the watch, if only to see Studio Ghibli's beautiful art and to appreciate how far Goro Miyazaki has come as a director.
