hyped garbage
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Sure, Sister Act is a bit silly and won't win any awards, but I really enjoyed it because it's fun, and its heart is in the right place. What elevates it is the musical numbers. Whoopi Goldberg (Sister Mary Clarence) shines as the sleazy Vegas lounge singer who finds herself rebooting a woeful church choir. She's been sent to the church's convent to be a nun under witness protection, after witnessing a mafia shooting in a nightclub. The casting is excellent - including the strict mother superior, played by Dame Maggie Smith, and a gaggle of very eccentric nuns led by the wonderful Mary Wickes and Kathy Najimy. The Goldberg role was going to be played by Bette Midler, but I think Goldberg is even better in this role - more streetwise and convincing is being a fish out of water. Goldberg injects a manic desperation to her very jaded floozy character, who, it turns out, does have a heart after all. But back to the music. The combination of Motown and revved up church songs works beautifully. Much of the movie's comedy comes from Goldberg's frustrating journey in trying to teach the unruly nuns to sing in tune. When the choir finally gets its act together, it's quite thrilling, and the choreography and cinematography of their performances is perfectly executed. Goldberg's character does go on a journey by finding her talent for directing the choir, and by helping the nuns start to step outside to minister to the local community. In some ways, Sister Act is like an old fashioned Hollywood movie. It is heavy on dialogue in indoor settings, and goes for pithy set-ups and one liners. It's a little corny. It's not that believable but it's just so enjoyable. It will lift your spirits and make you feel good. Which, to me, is a worthwhile achievement for any film.
I loved Sister Act. I know Sister Act isn't a religious faith-based movie, but for a Hollywood mainstream feature, it had a sympathetic look at mainstream religion through Whoopi Goldberg's performance as lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier. The scene at the end where Harvey "The Piano" Keitel's character orders the execution of Deloris by his henchman, there was an in-depth calm of Deloris. For this scene alone Whoopi should have been nominated for an Oscar.Maggie "Downton Abbey" Smith also appears in Sister Act.
I caught a glimpse of this again on TV a few days ago so I decided to throw a review on it.Whoppi Goldberg plays Dolores a nightclub singer who witnesssed a mob murder thanks to her mob boyfriend played by Harvey Kitnel and she has to leave the city. So she ends up telling the cops about it and one of the cops helps her escape by what else go undercover as a nun and hide out in a convent. So Dolores goes under the guise of St Mary Clarence and the convent is ran by Maggie Smith(Downton Abbey,Harry Potter franchise)and at first Smith doesn't take a shine to Goldberg but since the choir isn't doing that great, Goldberg decides to take matters into her own hands and decides to make the choir sing better as well Dolores used to be a nightclub singer. So will the choir improve with their singing which is all over the place?Bottom line this was a great film. I watched it so many times as a kid and it was funny in some parts. Also starring in this movie is Kathy Najmmi from Hocus Pocas and that hilarious flick Rat Race.Check it out and see what you think of it.
Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg) is a singer in a Reno casino lounge act. Her boyfriend Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel) won't leave his wife. To her surprise, he's a mob boss and she witnesses him kill somebody. She becomes a witness for the police and they hide her as a nun in a convent run by the Reverend Mother (Maggie Smith). She clashes with convent life. She befriends some of the other nuns and she coaches the choir to some success. She also pushes the nuns to interact and clean up their rundown neighborhood to the dismay of the Reverend Mother. Meanwhile Vince has a large contract out on her life. The characters are likable. Kathy Najimy is fun. Whoopi has a bit of street wise edge that plays well with the other nuns. It's not anything with big laughs but it gives a few smile-worthy moments. It's conventional in its structure and humor.
