Wow! What a bizarre film! Unfortunately the few funny moments there were were quite overshadowed by it's completely weird and random vibe throughout.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

It wasn't Hitchcock, but for me it was a fun, entertaining thriller. I happen to like Kate Beckinsale. Not every movie is a gem, but I thought this was a good B flick

In 1957, a Russian cargo plane flies over frozen Antarctica carrying a mysterious metal-lined box. Something sinister is afloat. Suddenly there is skulduggery aboard, and as the Russians are not very bright, the airplane crashes with all hands lost. Decades later a scientific expedition of three geologists looking for meteors discovers the plane and its secret – obviously valuable – cargo. What were those canisters locked in that metal box? Whatever it is, its consequences result in the body of one of them found murdered in the frozen wasteland. Enter Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale), US Marshal at American Base Camp in Antarctica, whose job is to investigate the murder. She has only a few days before the base is shut down by commander (Shawn Doyle) for the long six months of winter. The case is especially time- sensitive, as a storm is brewing and the airplane must leave before it strikes, or else be stranded for the season. Before that though, we are introduced to her stripping down to her white undies and displaying her derriere before showering. Carrie is plagued with recurring nightmares that concern her killing of her double-crossing partner in a past Miami drug bust. This necessary action left her questioning her abilities as a marshal. In the compound Carrie is closest with several men, and at least one may be a bad guy (there are not many other choices). The men include kindly and capable - but guarded - Dr. John Fury (Tom Skerritt); the newly arrived UN investigator Robert Pryce (Gabriel Macht), who takes charge of the investigation; the bantering airplane pilot Delfy (Columbus Short) and the sassy Aussie pilot Russell Haden (Alex O'Loughlin). The plot has holes and is thin. And the story- line really is not all that thrilling as Beckingsale – not the greatest actress (at least then) – is saddled with a weak script. One of her strange actions is to unwisely crack open the sealed, stainless steel canisters from the metal box. Uh, Carrie, that might be radioactive material, you know! Or there may be germs! Ever hear of biological warfare? The main action does involve a climactic fight in whiteout conditions, as unidentifiable parka-wearing folks grapple in the heavy-blowing snow. One of these men is a killer wielding an ice pick. Besides the lame script, my complaint is that of Ms. Beckingsale's appearance. With all of her nightmares, tensions, exposures to brutal conditions, battles with an ice pick-wielding killer, and the loss of two fingers on her left hand, she just looks a little bit too good!

People have commented on the beautiful shots of the colorful sky, so I suppose there were a few instances of good cinematography in the movie. However, in my opinion, most of the cinematography, editing and art direction sucked. First of all, it was filmed in Canada. Was there even one scene filmed in Antarctica? I'm sure Antarctica has beauty of it's own separate from Canada (I've been to both), but one wouldn't know it from this film, as it was Antarctica in fantasy only. As people have pointed out, where were the penguins? Where were the walruses? What bothered me most about the art direction of this movie was the many scenes where one couldn't hardly see anything. Either snow storm, or dark rooms lit by a little flashlight, or just a scene with hardly anything showing, most of the movie seemed to be on such a low budget that they didn't having anything in the back of the scene to show!Others have pointed out the limitations of this movie, so I won't repeat that. I agree with them wholeheartedly.

I'm writing this review after watching 'Whiteout' a second time. I saw it a couple of years ago as I'm a reasonable fan of Kate Beckinsale and wondered why I couldn't remember a thing about my initial viewing. Now I've watching it a second time I figured I better write this review before I totally forget it yet again. It's pretty damn forgettable.Beckinsale plays a U.S. Marshall who's stationed in Antarctica and uncovers the continent's first murder. She therefore has to solve it because... well, just because. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm a fan of Kate Beckinsale. However, I just couldn't really buy her as a tough, hardened U.S. Marshall. Her 'cat-like' sleekness worked brilliantly in the 'Underworld' films as she was an immortal vampire, however, now she's human, believing she has lived her life knocking people's heads together and bringing down drugs cartels doesn't really add up.The research station she's based in is filled with men (yes, you see a couple other women, but they don't really come into it). The concentrate on the men because the killer is blatantly a man, so you need to try and work out who. It basically descends into a 'slasher film in snow.' Whereas as similar films (like 'Scream') had interesting suspects who might be the killer, here we have the blandest bunch of guys ever seen on screen. You won't really care who's the killer and who gets killed. You're left with a bland 'slasher' film with a clichéd 'cop with a dark past' thrown in there. The dialogue is bland. The action is bland and you just won't care about anything.I don't know why, but I kept thinking of John Carpenter's classic horror film 'The Thing.' Yes, I know the only real similarity between the two is the snowy setting, but, if you want to watch a 'who-dunnit' in the snow, just watch the one with the alien in. At least it has gross special effects! Yes, most guys will enjoy Beckinsale's opening scene, but, after that's over, it's pretty much downhill all the way.
