Along Came Polly

Reuben Feffer is a guy who's spent his entire life playing it safe. Polly Prince is irresistible as a free-spirit who lives for the thrill of the moment. When these two comically mismatched souls collide, Reuben's world is turned upside down, as he makes an uproarious attempt to change his life from middle-of-the-road to totally-out-there.

The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

Along Came Polly is a very good romantic comedy. It tells the story of a stable man with a good job falling for a woman who is not so stable in life. It really covered all the bases of a good movie, and kept me enthused all the way through. I am not too much of a Hoffman fan myself, but I think he had some of the funniest parts in the whole movie. Great time!8 Stars

Reuben (Ben Stiller) is a straitlaced risk manager who tries to calculate risk in most everything he does. We witness his marriage to Lisa (Debra Messing), but on their honeymoon things go terribly wrong and they separate. Then along comes Polly (Jennifer Aniston) who is played as a disorganized free spirit who can never make decisions. So, the setup is the clichéd one of rigid person being drawn out of his shell by carefree companion. Philip Seymour Hoffman provides a couple of laughs as Reuben's wacky friend, particularly the scene with him on the basketball court. Hoffman does seem to at least be trying rather than phoning it in, but Ben Stiller plays Reuben as Ben Stiller--he doesn't have much of a range does he? Stiller did have one good scene doing a frenetic salsa dance. Alec Baldwin seems to be there simply as a draw at the box office, since any one of a hundred actors could have played his part as Reuben's boss. There are several running gags that got old real fast, like Polly's blind pet ferret running into things, Reuben's suffering from irritable bowl syndrome, and Hoffman's falling down on hard floors. The thing that most irritated me was playing Reuben's IBS for laughs--I always have a hard time with physical or mental disabilities being played for laughs. Reuben's bowel problem was cause for a lot of unfunny bathroom humor. There was hardly a single sharp line of dialog. Seeing this movie and thinking back to the old Cary Grant/Kathryn Hepburn comedies (think "Bringing up Baby") makes me realize just how coarsened and dumbed down our culture has become.I had better stop here, further consideration my cause me to move my two star rating to one star.

I just watched this movie and it's not terrific but it's not down right horrible. I thought Ben Stiller and Jennifer Anniston made a fine couple but maybe not the most believable. The good things about this movie are the actors are good for the most part, I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman was very funny as Ben Stiller's best friend, and there are definitely some things about the movie that are funny. What I don't like about this movie are while I thought Alec Baldwin was good in it I thought he was a little out of place but that's only a minor detail. I didn't care for the dancing scenes, Hank Azaria who I thought was good in Night At The Museum 2 was not enjoyable in this and the movie is full of gross out humor. I don't entirely mind that but like Ben Stiller's character I am germaphobic and I have IBS. I had to fast forward the bathroom scene and I'm glad I did. This is one of many movies that came out in 2004 that had Ben Stiller. This one was okay, Starsky and Hutch is one that I really enjoy, I have never seen Envy nor do I plan to, Dodgeball was pretty funny, and Meet The Fockers is my favorite. Anchorman is actually but he only had a cameo in it. I may need to re-watch it because it wasn't that bad it was just weird and had a lot of gross out humor.

Reuben Feffer (Ben Stiller) is a by the numbers guy who calculates risks for a living. He's with his wife Lisa Kramer (Debra Messing) on their honeymoon when she runs off with horribly accented Claude (Hank Azaria). So he goes home alone, and meets an old schoolmate Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston). She's his opposite, a freestyle no-plans nomad. If this was a simple boy meets girl story, there's a chance for a good rom-com here. But this movie starts off bad. Hank Azaria has a really stupid accent. And having his butt shoved in our face isn't funny. In fact this movie tries very hard and gets very few laughs. It seems that everybody is trying to one up everybody else. Besides wacky Hank Azaria, Alec Baldwin is his inappropriate boss. Philip Seymour Hoffman is his annoying best friend. But Ben Stiller is the biggest problem with a way too pathetic character. Ladies like confidence, so it's hard to see why she likes him. They could fix this easily by Reuben showing passion for the numbers, and Polly loving Reuben for his passion. It's OK to love the numbers. And it's OK to love somebody who loves the numbers.
