Best movie ever!
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
Get The Gringo or How I Spent My Summer Vacation as it says on my DVD (2012)Plot In A Paragraph: A career criminal (Gibson) nabbed by Mexican authorities is placed in a tough prison where he learns to survive with the help of a young boy.I enjoyed a lot of this movie.especially Mel's Clint Eastwood impression. After grieving parent in Edge Of Darkness and slightly mad in The Beaver, sGibson brings all the things he does best charm, wit, humour and a dangerous edge to his character. I also seen a lot of similarities between his character in this and Porter in Payback (also the last time he did a voice over) although I never bought his relationship with the kids mother. He had a closer bond with the kid. This was my first time watching this and I was reminded a lot of Prison Break season 3 watching this. I enjoyed it.I never realised Gibson wrote and produced this movie. It was released (for reasons unknown) VOD at the last minute in the US.
First, the good: gunplay was spot on, set design was very good as the Pueblito looked gritty and foreboding, and the soundtrack was pleasant to the ear. Lots of action, too, albeit a bit over the top.The bad? It was filmed using digital video. Nice for commercials, bad for feature-length films. The digital sheen of video subtracts from the "feel" of the movie, making it seem sterile and amateurish.Mel Gibson was, well, Mel Gibson, just a little older. There's no mistaking he was Riggs from Lethal Weapon. Everything was intact - the wise cracks, the mannerisms, the ultra bravado, etc. That a top level businessman could be fooled into thinking a random phone call from Clint Eastwood could grant him an audience seems preposterous. In fact, quite a few things seemed preposterous. How convenient that Mel should not money retrieve the money he'd stolen, but also gain a wife and son in the process! This film really wants the audience to have a suspension of disbelief to enjoy the film. Maybe I would've liked it better if I was loaded up on Modelo's like half the characters in the flick.
A very clever film or a clever setup I might say, this is good old Mel Gibson back for more. The film has a good story, great narrative, impressive action, nice filming and good directing. Maybe in the film the odds are against him, but watching this he certainly has something good going for him, it is almost like seeing the good old action movies of his, like Payback or even the humor and action ones, like Lethal Weapon.I think this film works out very well, it is entertaining and interesting all of the way, a great film for the guys :) You should see it if you haven't and especially if you like Mel Gibsons action movies.
I have always liked Mel Gibson and I really do not care how drunk or politically incorrect he might be. I still like to see him in movies and this is a surprisingly good movie. The movie had a proper theatrical premier in most countries except USA where it went straight to VOD which I find a bit surprising. It is a lot better movie than much of the stuff that are shown in theaters. I suspect the politically correct hypocrites had something to do with that.Personally, I found this movie surprisingly good. Mel Gibson fit the role very well and made a quite good performance. The settings with the bizarre prison which looked like a cross between Alcatraz and Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen was quite cool. It was the kind of setting that I would not have been surprised to find in a Tarantino-movie. I also liked the cynical and somewhat ironical voice-over by Gibson. The story was okay. Perhaps not the most believable one but good enough for this kind of action movie. Speaking of action, there were indeed some decent action in the movie but it is not like the movie is overloaded with it. It is nicely spread out and once the action starts it is pretty good. It is also true that some scenes are a wee bit gruesome but I am not sure that I agree with the R-rating. Most of the time that rating felt a bit over the top. Still, I rather have a R-rated movie with cuts than a PG-13 with lots of silly cuts in it.There were some silly bits of course, like how easy Mel could evade the prison and make a "business-trip" to the states when he finally felt like it and the entire business of performing transplantation surgery in a filthy prison. Mel might have found that "put it back" statement funny when he wrote it but it came out rather silly to me.Bottom line is that this was a quite enjoyable movie. A perfect after-work movie when you feel like parking your brain somewhere in the garage with your car and just sit down and watch something requiring a minimum of concentration.
