The Worst Film Ever
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
Review based solely on the trailer, so do feel free to discredit it, for now. I do intend to obtain this one, and will then come back, adding a more informed review, so watch this space! As a huge BRING IT ON fan (well, natch! I am RavenGlamDVDCollector after all, the hottest hound dog on pretty actresses tails, er, trails) I am of course instantly intrigued, no, mesmerized, by the sight of pretty girls jumping about. I'm also a devoted AnnaLynne McCord fan (yay, 90210!) and I have to see her in this, even if she is the bad girl - Panthers Out! Ooh cute! I'm just saying! - yet again, like in NIP/TUCK. But most promising of all is this young long-legged blonde beauty Sarah Roemer who plays Carly, I can see I'm just gonna be awed by that lovely creature! The general consensus among the reviewers seems to be that the script is another plus point adding to the movie's sparkle, and it sure sounds like an unsung winner to me! Hope to buy real soon!Update, 2016/09/13. Have since obtained the DVD, and watched the movie, and I loved it. Was gonna write a review called "We are girl-watching we we are girl-watching" when I was reminded by the IMDb computer that I've already submitted the above little offering. The movie doesn't disappoint, it is every bit as cute as the trailer promised it to be. So the two leads are old boys, well, I can see why they were chosen, they fit the bill in every other aspect. So who'd have been cast among the young bucks of Hollywood, and would they have been able to match these performances? I think not. Anyway, on to the pretty stuff: Sarah Roemer defies description in terms of beauty, she is so cute she is impossibly cute, and no words I can utter would do justice to just exactly how cute she is, like perfect! AnnaLynne McCord post NIP/TUCK, pre 90210 gives a mesmerizing display as the apparently darkly psychotic lead Panther chick (who SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT turns out to be all bark but no bite) and there is a host of other young actresses playing loopy characters that make this movie fun from start to finish. I highly recommend it to people looking for a rollicking laugh. Lots of subversive little jokes too, many of the characters are gayer than rabbits, and the straight men are caught out in zany compromising situations.By the way, it is a cheerleading movie, whatever is said, it takes a while to get to actual cheerleading routines apart from practicing sessions, but that Fountain of Troy maneuver is awesome! And several others! How humans can 'fly' like birds... I wince when they fall, how do they stage the accidental falls, huh?I collect glam movies, pretty actresses are my thing, dazzling starlets, and this one, it's as good as it gets! So if you just wanna watch top quality girls, this play is just the thing!
Now, I know that a lot of people thought this movie wasn't that great, or even thought it was terrible, and that's their opinion. But I really love this movie. In fact, I just bought it on Bluray, to add to my collection. In this movie, Nick and Shawn are the biggest ladies man at their high school. And instead of going to football camp like they usually do, they decide to join the cheerleading squad and go their camp instead. All in the hopes of getting laid. After chasing so much tail at the camp, they decide to dessert their team and go finish the Summer at football camp. Unfortunly, they didn't realize that they would fall for people at the camp. Nick fell for his cheerleading coach, who is married, and owns the camp. And Shawn fell for the captain of their cheerleading squad. They eventually come back and try and help them win the big tournament, that they have at the end of Summer. They didn't win, but they all ended up with happy endings. My favorite part of the movie is probably when they're at the camp, and everyone is watching Bring It On. It's so funny that they reference another cheerleading movie, within this cheerleading movie.Overall, I give this movie an 8 out of 10.
OK, so as far as teenage comedy films go, this one is funnier than most. One reviewer used the word "chemisty," and I think that's the key to this: the chemistry between the two dudes (Olsen and D'Agosto) in this film. And then between D'Agosto' character and the leadin' lady (Sarah Roemer) he's trying' to woo; it's believable, which is huge considering big-name stars can't handle such things in big-budget flicks. That means solid, engaging acting in my book.Eric Christian Olsen (now on NCIS: Los Angeles) is hilarious. My two cents. Oh, and David Walton as the evil-current-boyfriend is hilarious as well.Just a tight script, because Olsen and D'Agosto play off each other the entire time, and it just never got old for me. Again, chemistry. Even the bit characters had some really funny quirks that had me laughing (so I didn't have to rely on Olsen and D'Agosto to keep me laughing and engaged). So yeah, it's just a teenage comedy flick. But I've watched it several times over the years, and I laugh every time. Just watched it again last night, it just draws me back in every time (prompting this review). So not to over-analyze it, but that means 8/10 for me, if I keep it in perspective.
Giving the movie a 7 and the DVD a 9 for an 8 average. This is how you make a predictable teen comedy work - keep your foot on the gas at all times, even through the end credits. There's about 120 minutes worth of script packed in to 90 minutes here and most of that is carried well by the capable (if playing well beyond age) leading men. At least one repeat viewing is necessary. Most of the failings of the film are addressed openly in the DVD commentary, hence my higher rating. Everything from poor location scouting to keeping large nostrils tilted down gets discussed (and banana pants is the secret phrase). The biggest mistake brought up being the push to get a PG-13 rating for a movie almost exclusively about sex. Some of that works for laughs, though, as the substitute swear words are always more entertaining than their standard counterparts. In the end everyone wins and everyone is a better person. Did I mention it was predictable? But the jokes are funny and not overworked, and the women are beautiful. A great movie to have running in the background when you can't decide what to watch.
