A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
The first installment to this franchise is paws down the best. The story about Air Bud becoming a basketball star is very heartfelt and fun to watch. I also love the fact that Air Bud doesn't talk! Nothing against Air Buddies but I think it's better that the dogs don't talk in Air Bud. Yeah, the fact that a dog can play basketball is a bit silly but it's played out in a surprisingly mature and heartfelt way. Air Bud, himself is very lovable and has a lot of character, without having to talk. Air Bud's connection with the boy is very sweet and probably one of the best things about the movie. Well, aside from the heartfelt ending that I will NOT spoil here. Watch the movie for yourself and come to your own conclusions.
This movie is actually really good. I mean, just the premise, a dog who can play basketball, who could resist? It's so adorable. I don't think this is really a kids movie. Anyone of any age can enjoy it. From little kids, to teenagers, such as a myself, to young adults, to middle aged adults, to seniors. I really do believe that anyone can like this movie. Some parts did make me angry though. I hate violence against dogs, so when I saw Buddy's first owner, yelling at him and mistreating him, I was like "Okay, you need to calm your farm, and be nice to that dog. If you can't be nice to a dog or any other animal, then give him up for adoption, to a family, who will actually treat him like a lovable best friend, instead of a side show act." Overall, I really like this movie, and I give it an 8 out of 10.
I am in disbelief right now, seeing all these horrible comments about a great family movie. I grew up loving all of the air bud movies, especially the first one. It really is a feel good movie, and I found it realistic. You have a young boy, who is struggling because of his fathers death, and he really does not have anything to look forward too. But when buddy comes into his life, everything changes. He is having a lot more fun, and you can see that throughout this movie. How can anyone say this is movie has no plot? The plot centers around a boy struggling, looking for something, and finds it in Buddy I know it is not real realistic for a dog to play basketball, but honestly, i could care less. This is a great family movie, one that i would recommend to anyone.
I like this movie, I really do. I saw this movie with my uncle for my birthday when I was 10, and I was so excited about this. And now, six years later, I still am. Josh is an 11 year old boy who moves with his sister and his mum after his father died. He's lonely, and he doesn't make friends at his new school. Until he finds a dog, also lonely. The dog belongs to some sort of clown who mistreats him and isn't really nice to him, but the dog got lost and escaped from him. And then they, the boy and the dog, become friends. Josh is the 'waterboy' of the school's basketball-team, but that changes when he discovers that the dog, with the name Buddy, can play basketball. There's nothing wrong with this film. It's a warm movie about a special friendship between two 'loners'. The story is not always really logical; it's never explained how the dog did find Josh back, but that isn't important. It's a kids movie, and children don't think about the logicalness of the movie. The actors are all wonderful in this film. Wendy Makkena, the shy Maria Roberta in the Sister Act-films, the young Kevin Zegers, a sympathetic Bill Cobs in a cliché role, and most of all Michael Jeter. It's really a shame that he died, it was such a wonderful actor. And of course Buddy, with his wonderful trainer Kevin DiMaccio, also one of the writers and producers. In this time of tragic, bloody and heavy cinema, people should enjoy this kind of films. Warm, light-hearted, and most of all: funny.
