Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

Never mind how bad this movie is. I spent most of it trying to figure out where and when it's supposed to be set. The time is easier - seems to be late 1800s, with anachronistic elements. But as to where? No idea. The accents and place names, etc. seem to be completely all over the place. Given the diversity one might think it was the US but it's clearly meant to be someplace European (even though the wealthy locals speak with distinct American accents). Baffling movie.

Judging by the cover of this film thoughts of 'Van Helsing' and 'Underworld' spring instantly to mind...and your not far wrong with that. This is pretty much a copy and mix of both of those films, chock full of lovely clichéd characters and everything you've ever seen before in a werewolf movie.Bunch of crazy hardass werewolf hunters come to a small village to purge them of the wolf horror. A young man from the village volunteers to help them do so but there are twists to come, many predictable twists that aren't too well hidden. The film looks quite good with that typically bleak, dark, murky, 19th century, forest set, Eastern European village look. The characters are basically rips from many other films and include your obligatory Hudson from 'Aliens' type, the cool calm Clint Eastwood-esque leader, the sexy ninja like female and a well spoken, smartly dressed toff who throws lots of little knives. A kind of quirky 'League of Extraordinary Gentleman' type looking gang. The dialog is all the right kind of hero spouting fluff you have heard before, tight little one liners throughout the action just to emphasise these guys are cool and tough etc..The reason I watched the film (apart from being a werewolf fan) was down to the reasonable looking effects. It swings from good to bad really, some shots of the werewolf's claws, eyes or silhouettes against the darkness are pretty neat and work well. The transformation sequences are fully CGI and a bit hokey but I've seen worse, whilst in full CGI motion the creature doesn't look that bad. Put it this way its no worse than the first 'Underworld' flick which had a much bigger budget.Unknown cast accept for previous vampire player Stephen Rea, none of which are much to shout about although Guy Wilson who plays the young man from the village looks perfect for his character. Honestly for a straight to DVD film this isn't too bad and offers some nice visuals and claret soaked action, just don't expect anything original at tall.5/10

'Werewolf: The Beast Among Us' was a thrilling surprise to say the least. I hadn't heard much about this film, other than that Universal was planning on releasing this film direct-to-video after they abandoned their plans to make sequels and spin-off films of their remake of 'The Wolfman' from 2010. Whoever made this decision, made a good one, because 'Werewolf: The Beast Among Us' doesn't just bring the blood and guts, but it has clever twists and turns, and takes the werewolf legend to a different level.Almost every werewolf film I have ever seen, the movie and characters deal with the werewolf as it's the first time to ever come across one. Most films go into the legend, the folklore, and initial experience of dealing with this new beast. What's great about 'Werewolf: The Beast Among Us', is that there is none of this. It takes place in Transylvania where werewolves are a common thing. Everybody knows about werewolves, and the town-folk have come to terms that they have to deal with with these beasts on almost a daily basis. That is until, a new werewolf starts causing trouble. This particular werewolf is unlike any other werewolf the townspeople have seen. This one is faster, meaner, uglier, and just hell-bent on causing death. It reminded me of 'Alien 3', with Ripley talking how different the Alien is in that movie. However, low and behold, since werewolves are a constant menace, you can hire werewolf hunters. In 'Werewolf: The Beast Among Us', we get a gang of professional werewolf hunters, who promise to deliver the beast's dead body.Don't let the title or fact that this is direct-to-video dissuade you from watching or purchasing this, because this was actually quite good. There are some gory death scenes for you blood and guts fanatics out there, as well as a few surprises that would make M. Night Shyamalan take notice. The werewolf itself looked surprisingly good for not have a huge budget. It's a mix of CGI and actual prosthetics and makeup. After watch the behind the scenes featurettes on how they created the wolf, they could have just used the prosthetics and make up for the werewolf and left out the CG effects out.Steven Bauer and Stephen Rea turn in decent performances with what they are given. Some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy and seems like it was written to air specifically on the SYFY channel. That being said, 'Werewolf: The Beast Among Us' is a new take and glimpse into the werewolf genre, and it is most welcome. While this won't be remembered or brought up in any werewolf conversations, this sharp and bloody little film should be seen.

I really don't understand the latest craze with classic beasts of horror. For some reason, they feel they have to sex it up; that's not a problem in and of itself, but it's usually done with zero substance. This film is a prime example of such a laissez-faire approach. Still, even film-makers have to pay the bills, I suppose.Furthermore, this film doesn't even bother to excuse itself. Within the first fifteen minutes, you will know exactly what is going on, and there will be no mystery as to who the beast is among them. What this film does have is a lot of action; so if you can turn a deaf ear to the crass dialogue and a storyline that randomly darts about, it's not a bad ride.Unfortunately, I was paying attention, so I gave this film a 3/10.
