Purely Joyful Movie!
As Good As It Gets
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Let me start with, what many others have started with... I'm a huge Bruce Campbell fan. But where I differ from the others I understand and can distinguish the difference between Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead trilogy. If you are a Campbell and Raimi fan and have any knowledge of their background you will know they love slapstick comedy like The Stooges. To me, this film is near perfection and I'd much rather see films like this than the rinse and repeat Hollywood is churning out like Harry Potter and Superhero films. This film really has a lot of heart and when people say it's bad acting and low budget, yes it's been made on a low budget but no, the acting is no bad, it's just acted in a very particular style. If you enjoy comedy and are a Bruce Campbell fan, this film is for you.
I have to confess that the mass popularity of Bruce Campbell somewhat mystifies me. Yes, he does have talent and charm, but I don't see how he's managed to become a big cult star. Neverless, I was intrigued enough to watch the Bruce Campbell movie "Man with the Screaming Brain" since Campbell was not only starring in the movie, but acting as the writer and the director. However, after watching it, I think that even Bruce Campbell fanatics will find this a disappointing effort. There are a lot of problems with it, many of them due to the script. The story (which seems to have gotten its inspiration from the Steve Martin movie "All of Me", out of all sources) is pretty thin. It takes almost half of the movie before the movie fully sets up the situation. Once everything is set up, the movie's story doesn't speed up that much; they have to throw in a subplot about Campbell's on screen wife to pad things out, for example. But there's a bigger problem. While there are a few (slightly) amusing sequences here and there, the movie as a whole simply isn't very funny. The humor in the script is obvious and lacking creativity and a sense of wackiness. And being the camera, Campbell seems unable to direct his actors with any energy and originality that might have milked a few drops of humor out of the predictable script. To top it off, even by Sci Fi network standards, the movie is really cheap and threadbare, from the shoddy photography to the minimal set decoration. While the movie is not the worst Sci Fi network movie I have been unlucky to see, I am sure that most Bruce Campbell fans will agree that it's one of the most disappointing efforts the network has produced to date.
OK, well, no one in their right mind(s) would pick up a movie titled "The Man with the Screaming Brain" and expect it to be serious. This is an outrageous b-movie, and that means a truly hokey plot, strange characters, clichés, over-the-top action, and oh-so-cheesy one liners. For that odd segment of the population (including myself) that gets a kick out of that kind of thing, this is a gem.The acting is better than expected. Stacy Keach is embedded in his character. Bruce Campbell brings a spirited, convincing performance. His physical comedy skills are truly impressive in this movie and hearken back to the "Evil Dead" films.
I like Bruce Campbell from his Evil Dead and Army of Darkness roles so I was hoping The Man With The Screaming Brain would be better than it is. Unfortunately most of it is a bore. There is some good satire at the beginning of the film then it degenerates into a wannabe horror film. Ted Raimi steals the show doing a Shemp Howard (Three Stooges) impersonation which is certainly over the top but it's the only funny thing in the movie. The two women in the film look great -- Antoinette Byron and especially Tamara Gorski with her fiery eyes. Vladimir Kolev as Yegor the cab driver is very good. Stacy Keach is wasted, another aging actor placed in a horror film like so many have been in the past. You can see Bruce Campbell trying to pay homage to Sam Raimi's directorial style in a few scenes. Filmed in Bulgaria.
