Downfall

In April of 1945, Germany stands at the brink of defeat with the Russian Army closing in from the east and the Allied Expeditionary Force attacking from the west. In Berlin, capital of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler proclaims that Germany will still achieve victory and orders his generals and advisers to fight to the last man. When the end finally does come, and Hitler lies dead by his own hand, what is left of his military must find a way to end the killing that is the Battle of Berlin, and lay down their arms in surrender.

It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

I am just from watching this film, and I must say the realism, the acting, the portrayal of those imagined last days of Hitler in his bunker just before the Red Army overrun Berlin is remarkable.I was especially moved by the fact that this movie has been critically hailed for staying as true to the "facts" as possible. Off course all movies will have key details changed for dramatic purposes, but the director and writer tried as much as possible to remain factual in all portrayals here. The performance by Bruno Gantz playing as Adolf Hitler was remarkable down to even his looks. I am surprised this movie did not get a nod from the Oscar people or perhaps it did and I am not aware. I only learned of this film just last week as it was reviewed on someone's list and being the history buff I am, wanted to verify for myself. The performances from the supporting cast is also impeccable, the actors that play Goebbels, his wife, Himmler, Eva Braun, several of the generals and even the main character that plays Jungl is spectacular and nothing short of award winning (IMHO). It is amazing how such a gem can be missed by mainstream movie buffs like me.Bottom line, watch this movie, you wont regret it. If you dont mind reading subtitles when watching (as it all in German), then this is a must watch on your list. For me, this film is certainly at the same level as Schindler's List, A Beautiful Life and other such noteworthy World War II Dramas.

This film was sold as a kind of definitive account of what happened in Hitler's bunker during the final days of WWII, free from the prejudice, based on fact, made from a historical distance that allows for even the supposed monster that Hitler was to be humanised. What a load of crap. This film reinforces every single stereotype in the book, and Hitler comes across as a raving, heartless lunatic. So do all his companions, with the exception of a few figures that were never charged with any crimes anyhow, and could be allowed to be even sympathetic. People laugh at this film thanks to the numerous Hitler rants parodies that now exist in what must be tens of thousands, but I laughed at it even before these parodies became prominent. Does anyone take the persona of Adolf Hitler, as it is portrayed in the film, seriously? How is it different from the previous depictions? You see, as long as your premise is that he was the most evil man ever, and that his regime was the most inhuman ever, you will never come close to being honest or realistic in the depiction of these characters. Interestingly enough, the emotional pitch point of the film is actually the murder of Goebbels' children. The way it is presented is to strengthen the prejudice: these people were heartless killers who would even kill their children for the sake of their insane ideas. But that is not true. What do you think the fate of these children would have been had the Soviets captured them? First of all, they would have killed the parents. Then they would have either killed the children, or raised them as the most despised kids, as virtual slaves in a country that defines itself as the enemy of the ideology their parents espoused. What kind of life would that have been? As I said earlier, you cannot make an honest film if you are not prepared to look at the facts honestly. As long as you insist on maintaining stereotypes and ideological dogmas, as well as obvious propaganda, you will never make a film that will be of any value. Hopefully we will get better films as time goes by.

All I can say is this is a remarkable movie from start to finish. One of the best wwii movies I've ever seen. Acting is outstanding and the story sucks you in. There is a reason this movie has so many great reviews. It's an incredible movie about a very dark time in world history... it's well worth your time to watch it.

I've seen this movie 3 times and every single time I'm left with a heart pounding with emotions. This is not a work of fiction; it's the biography of a young and innocent girl who gets hired to be one of Hitler's secretary. The entire movie is seen through her eyes and that's why you discover more intimate aspects of Hitler who is capable of infinite kindness towards the women surrounding him but can snap into a complete maniac in a matter of seconds with his soldiers. It's a psychological movie about human nature, power and a sense of unity which can carry people beyond total madness. The last minutes of the movie are the most intense because everyone is aware that they are about to die; they have lost the war yet nobody has the courage to tell Hitler the truth: he can't handle it!
