The Worst Film Ever
Great movie! If you want to be entertained and have a few good laughs, see this movie. The music is also very good,
The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
I saw this movie thrice and realized how hard it is for the other side of King to accept legal judgements in his own court as a human and level of sacrifices that has to be made against his personal desire....Marrying so many women following the custom, Hand tied and Not even able to propose someone(Anna) he loves. Admired the entire setup in this movie and the places were like fairy tale. Background sound track was excellent that gives a real feel of the story and characters...Well performed by Anna & the King especially the scenes around the killing of Tuptim for deciding a noble path via Buddhist Monk...Great lifetime Movie
Anna and the King is a biographical drama loosely based on Anna and the King of Siam, the story of Anna Leonowens, who was an English schoolteacher in Siam, now Thailand, in the 19th century. It stars Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat together with Bai Ling and Tom Felton. This movie is a tale of Anna's culture clash and unexpected romance with King Mongkut, the King of Siam. It was directed by Andy Tennant.Anna Leonowens is hired by the king of Thailand to help care for his children. The king wants the best for his children, but Anna soon discovers that he is a strong-willed but quixotic leader, and her stay in Thailand becomes a struggle for power with romantic overtones, as they decide who will have authority over the royal youngsters. The movie is a deliberate retelling of 'The King and I' without the musical interludes. It is a slow, but ultimately rewarding period drama due to the cast's performances particularly Jodie Foster and the movie's beautiful cinematography. It remains watchable and entertaining for it is a richly satisfying mix of history, drama and romance despite its old- fashioned overtones.
first of all as I was born and raise in Thailand. this movie is extremely disturbing and inaccurate in every mannor. the thai language had been spoken in this movie by the Chinese actors and actresses almost incorrect and can't be understand and the 2nd, Lady Tabtim according to the thai history stated to be very attractive woman of that time because she has south Asian (Indian descent) large eyes and curl hair - that is the ideal of beauty of thai people in old time which influenced by the Indian literatures -Beiling the Chinese actress as lady tabtim is a very poor choice and 3 rd, there is no thai princess names fa ying - this word means princess.
I remember seeing Anna And The King on its Australian release in 1999 and thinking what a wonderful, sumptuous, if at times tragic romantic drama it all was. SPOILER ALERT Certain images remain in the mind long after the film is viewed such as the bathing scene where we see much of Ms Fosters legs or the execution of Tuptim or the bridge being detonated. The performances of Main and Supporting cast are superb; Jodie Foster and Chow Yun Fat work well together.SPOILER ALERT The dialog allows for some ironic political correctness about the nature of imperialism which mark this as a liberal and not conservative film in the Raj tradition of the Rank films. On release the 2.30min length passed quickly enough but now in the light of even most period costume drama such as Sofia Coppala's Marie Antionette or the British Film The Duchess, Andy Tennants pacing seems slow and not as wonderfully paced as his delightful Drew Barrymore period Comedy Ever After. On release I would have given this a nine. Now as it has dated a little I feel it merits only 7 out of 10.
