Plenty to Like, Plenty to Dislike
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
Don't listen to the salty critics. The story is not in-depth enough but the movie is highly entertaining and original and is really something else.
As this film opens we are told that there are various classes of psychic people among us; these include Watchers, who can see the future, Movers, who can move items with their minds and Pushers, who can plant ideas in other people's minds, amongst others. These people are hunted by a US agency of psychics known as the Division and subjected to experiments aimed at increasing their powers; however every test subject has died until now. A pusher called Kira survives and promptly escapes with a sample of the drug. The action then moves to Hong Kong where a mover called Nick Carver is trying to stay under the radar. They find him and start asking about 'the girl', meaning Kira, but he has no knowledge of her; shortly after they leave he is visited by thirteen year-old Cassie Holmes who tells him that they must work together to find a case that will help them destroy the Division. It won't be easy; the Division obviously want the case back and a group of Chinese Psychics, guided by a more powerful watcher, are after it if that weren't enough all of Cassie's predictions about the future suggest they will all die!I hadn't heard much good about this film but decided to watch it anyway perhaps because I wasn't expecting too much I found myself rather enjoying it. The idea of people with special powers struggling against others with special powers is hardly new but more often than not every person will have their own unique power; this is different as many people share a limited range of powers. It is also different in that powers aren't too amazing nobody flies or walks through walls here. The way the powers work is nicely explained in the opening and the initial scenes set the story up nicely. Things progress well until the end; then we get the inevitable confrontation and a rather messy finale which appears to be setting things up for a second film which never happened. Chris Evans does a decent enough job as Carver however it is young Dakota Fanning who stands out as Cassie; making her the most believable of these unbelievable characters. There are plenty of fine scenes and some good action; the Hong Kong setting adds to the film's atmosphere giving and a more exotic feel than would have been the case if it had been set in a familiar US city. Overall an entertaining enough film; I just with it had a better ending.
I just watched this movie and I really don't and can't understand what all the hating is about... this movie is awesome! The cast was great, the cinematography AWESOME, and the directing fabulous. The story premise, though not 100% original, the script of this movie was. Fresh and different and much better written then all the super-hero movies out there now. I really love this movie... is there a Push 2????? It made money... what's the problem (That is why critics really suck because they can give such a bad name to something so good.) I read a view different comments for critics, all giving the film a bad name, explaining how it was not original nor good... how wrong are they. I extremely recommend this movie... much then what is being made now.
It started with the Nazis experimenting on people with psychic powers. Now there is a secret organization called Division that seeks to research and control people with powers. Nick Gant (Chris Evans) is a second generation Mover who has telekinetic powers. Cassie Holmes (Dakota Fanning) is a Watcher who can see into the future. She teams up with Nick to find a suitcase that will bring down Division. The idea of a secret world of people with superpowers never made a lot of sense. These powers are so great that it's questionable how they could possibly keep any of it a secret. It'd be better if the world isn't so clueless. It would give it better realism.I do like other realism in this movie. I like the real HongKong locations. I like the real effects, real stunts, and limiting the CG. I like that aspect of the movie.Chris Evans is OK as the lead, and I found Dakota Fanning interesting with a bit mystery. But Camilla Belle is too wooden. The story is over-explained and yet somehow seems confused. Director Paul McGuigan didn't get the best out of everybody.
