Powerful
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Audrey Woods (Julianne Moore) is a hopelessly uptight insecure but highly successful divorce lawyer who never dates and obsessively watches the weather channel. Daniel Rafferty (Pierce Brosnan) is a hot shot arrogant lawyer who just returned to town. She hates to be attracted to the ladies man, but they keep bumping into each other in court.Julianne Moore is overplaying this stumbling lawyer character. She's a high power lawyer filled with neuroses. It's like Julianne is trying to do an impersonation of Sandra Bullock. They might as well get Sandra to play this. Julianne is ill fitting for the role. The rom-com story is nothing special. This type of movie is wholly dependent on the two leads. Moore and Brosnan are not the most likely rom-com leads. That's where this movie failed. They are more suited for more serious movies. This is too light weight for them. It's a perfectly fine rom-com for somebody else. They also should cut down on the montages. It's lazy story telling.
Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan play rival lawyers in a divorce case who fly to Ireland to gather evidence against each others' clients. After a wild night at an Irish festival, they wake up married and with a distinct conflict of interest in this film entitled,Laws Of Attraction. This was based on a story by Aline Brosh McKenna and it was directed by Peter Howitt. The movie was simply a standard opposites-attract romantic comedy.Too bad that aside from being formulaic and clichéd,it was painfully predictable, full of implausibilities, and crowded with supporting characters that are underdeveloped and overplayed. The only thing good about it is that Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan create just enough chemistry to carry the movie. It adds nothing to its type of movie genre and it rather forgettable.
Seriously, you have here the perfect love story in the perfect setting with the most perfect couple one can think of, if you are thinking of true Irishmen and Irish descendants. Pierce Brosnan is witty, charming, cute "as per Frances Fisher in the film", and above all, incredibly gifted in this role. When you watch him here, you are reminded of the films of David Niven or Cary Grant, and that is no mean comparison coming from someone who sorely laments the lost of such talents. Julianne Moore comes up to Pierce brilliantly, and you could see this film occurring thirty years ago, starring Grant and Hepburn. Julianne's character is the perfect foil for Brosnan's in this delightful duel of the sexes. Parker Posey and Michael Sheen are the typical young adults caught up in their success, and going through a rough patch of the "I'm so neglected" stage of marriage, which the two of them carry off wonderfully. The maraschino cherry on this particular confection is the wonderful appearance of the beautiful Frances Fisher, than lovely lady who has the cheekbones of Venus de Milo and the accompanying smile. Rated PG-13 for sexual content and language, I personally recommend this as a film for you and that significant other when the kids are in bed, or for Date Night.
The movie wasn't that appealing to me the first time around ... but at the second viewing, I liked it more. It's a fast paced, dialog heavy and funny movie. It has it's weak points, but the humor and the good chemistry (between Brosnan and Moore). What almost brings it down (apart from the flaws in the script/story) is that it's too long. It also starts fast but slows down, after a "climax" scene between the two leads. The subplot with Michael Sheen and Parker Posey is overblown too (although it does have it's right to be there, for metaphorical reasons). If you can overlook those failings than you will be able to enjoy this romantic comedy! :o)
