Such a frustrating disappointment
Sadly Over-hyped
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
I honestly haven't got a lot of good things to say about Red Planet other than it tried. It really tried. This wasn't meant to be a movie that makes you fall asleep instead of afraid and thrilled and to that end I feel like I must go easier on it. The people behind the effects deserve praise and really push this movie up in quality. it's just a shame that it is undercut by lazy directing and bland as unbuttered white bread acting with Val Kilmer putting in a lazy performance to rival his batman performance a few years earlier. At the end of the day I can't recommend this movie. The only time I would say go ahead is if your internet is down at 3 in the morning and this is on TV, and even then I would check what was one Adult Swim first.
I made an account just to comment on this pile of garbage. If you thought Battlefield Earth was a well written, well acted and scientifically reasonable movie then you will find this to be absolute trash. If you liked the Martian, you wont even be able to last 30 minutes into this steaming pile of shite, it is the worst SF movie I have ever seen, perhaps even the worst movie period.Save yourself the time and just google Carrie Anne Moss shower scene, that boobshot was literally the only redeeming quality of this movie. Now they say I need more lines of text, this movie does not deserve 10 lines, just two words are sufficient, IT SUCKS!
I'm an avid science-fiction fan and I enjoy movies about space travel, especially if it's about traveling to the Mars. This movie is so unwatchable that I barely cared about what was happening to the characters. The movie is not engaging at all and the characters are all unlikable, even the actress that played Trinity in the Matrix looks completely bland in this horrible movie. The sets are all poorly made and even by the standards of 15 years ago, the special effects are disastrous;considering there were fantastic movies like the Matrix and the Terminator 2 around at the time.I'm sure my judgment has not been influenced by all the successful science fiction movies I've seen during all these years. I even enjoyed Mission to Mars. At least that movie was emotionally engaging, but this one is just horrible. By the end of the movie, my nephew and I were laughing out loud at how horrible the movie was and we both thought its only redeeming quality was the girl's space suit near the end of the movie, which was much more attractive than the ugly suits the characters had on all the time. This movie is not even eye-candy. It is just terrible. Do not even get me started on how unrealistic and unscientific it was. Avoid this movie like the plague.
Earth is suffering from environmental damage. Mars has been slowly terra-formed as an alternative home. However it is somehow losing oxygen. A space mission is sent to discover the cause. The spacecraft is damaged by massive gamma radiation burst and the crew crash land to investigate Mars.It takes too long to get the movie going. There is too much tech talk without any magic. They don't even get to Mars until after 30 minutes. They spent too much time talking on the spaceship. I think we're suppose to be awed by all the spaceship special effects. It's not that special. Most of the start could easily be thrown out.The action is confused and rather uncompelling. It doesn't get any better on the ground. It's a slow moving grind. The orange look, the helmets, and the buzzy voices all make for a tiring watch. Watching people slowly suffocate is really boring. Having Carrie-Anne separated from everybody doesn't help. The climax (if you could call it that) has no suspense. It is completely uninteresting.
