Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
A few weeks after seeing James Wan's 2011 wonderful Horror film Insidious,I began to hear about a ghost movie getting made by fellow Saw director Darren Lynn Bousman that was due to be brought out in the next few weeks.Keeping a look out for the movie,I was surprised to discover that the title was not to get any UK release at all!.Thankfully, whilst reading an article by Kim Newman,I was please to discover that the movie was finally being given the light of day in the UK,via going straight to a re-titled DVD.The plot:Grieving over the death of his wife and child in a house firer,Horror/Thriller novelistic Joseph Crone decides to try and reconnect to his dying father and his priest brother Samuel by paying them a visit to Barcelona.Ignoring his brother Samuel's offers for him to join "the flock",due to becoming an atheist after the death of his wife and child,Joseph begins to fear that he has walked onto the wrong path, when he starts to see "demons" slowly surrounding him in the unknown city.View on the film:With having a watched the ghost-hinting trailer in the past,I was surprised to discover that writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman had actually made a spiritual Neo-Noir with a good touch of satanic Horror.Whilst Joseph's "grip" on Atheism is something which gets broken in an insanely fast time, and the "twist" ending to the movie looking like a left-over from a Saw movie.Bousman is impressively able to cover over a good number of flaws in the plot,by showing the great Barcelona location in the icy cold light of day,as Joseph finds himself surrounded by dead ends,in a city that's desperate to keep its dark, deadly secrets hidden in any way possible.
I figured out the ending before midway through. I was skeptical re. brother's church from the get-go and the weird nurse/maid.It got a few stars because I did get a few chills early on. But the telling of the story was kind of choppy or over edited. Not much character build up. The mansion was the spookiest part and the apparitions but the story itself was lacking substance. The ending flashbacks of earlier scenes (gee, never seen that done before) was not really necessary because the end twist really wasn't much of a surprise twist. I guess it was put in for people who really need the obvious spelled out. The story telling or script could have been done much better for the premise. And a word for new horror film directors ... if the twist is not all that big of a twist or really not a twist at all ... don't play it up or play into it because it comes off amateurish and hokey.Overall, comparably, it's a good horror flick for a hulu dot com freebie. At least I made it through to the end and in the first half it was interesting and I did get my cheap horror thrills and chills.
11-11-11 was almost as bad as discussion forums say it is. The cinematography was on point, the acting was good, and the plot was engaging enough but it only had TV movie quality and the climax was terrible with unnecessary special effects to match. Costumes and makeup were equally as terrible. The script was bad. You expect more from Darren Lynn Bousman but you're not gonna get it here. It's low budget all the way but if it had a better script, I think he could've made it work. The payoff isn't good. You'll feel like you wasted your time because the ending is so poorly done. The Collector and The Woman in Black are good examples of how things should happen when trapped inside of a house of freaks. Not that The Collector is a good movie in comparison to The Woman in Black, which is a damn good movie and recommended, but it's the path that 11-11-11 should've followed in act three leading up to the climax. As it is, the ending comes across as going through a county fair haunted house ride. The movie isn't completely bad because I watched the whole movie but definitely not great. I've seen worse (Ultraviolet, The Day the Earth Stood Still).
First of all, anyone who has ever lost a child needs to stay the hell away from this movie. For real. It's harsh. This movie premise had potential. But it promptly derailed into WTF country. First, the soundtrack. The overly intense, Latin chanting filled, LOUD, and ever so dramatic music just ruined any creepy factors. The music was DAH-DAAAAAAHing nonstop. Also, how was it that Joe couldn't speak Spanish? How do you manage to grow up in Spain and not learn even basic tourist Spanish? And then poor Joe just kept seeing Emperor Palpatine everywhere. The twist was super predictable. At the church service, when his brother got all creepy and looked at him (amidst lurking Sith Lords), I was shrugged and went "Oh, he's the anti-Christ", but the OMG TWIST really was botched.Sadie was about the most pointless character.
