The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

I'm only writing this comment because I was tricked by all the over-the-top positive feedback this movie has here, on IMDb and after seeing it, I was deeply, deeply disappointed!I can't exactly explain how come all the comments are praising this one, maybe its viewers are a little under the age of 12 or maybe the people involved in the making of the film decided that their job turned out quite nicely and must let the world know about it. But they are wrong, so wrong! What is there to see ? It's extremely slowed paced, most unoriginal subject possible, the camera work seems a little rough and the so called creature, well now that was playing dumb right there. How can you honestly be "scared to death" or in a "permanent fear" like those above me said they were, when you see a 3 inches bone of a monster that kills you by jumping on your face and, well I guess, shaking itself till you DIE! Till you die?? Hehe...yes! Aw and also, it's one of those movies with a twist, yeah, only that the twist is practically spelled out to you since the 40th minute and after that you need to wait about an hour more to act surprised. SURPRISE!!Therefore, do yourself a favor: DO NOT WATCH IT! I could say that you can do a WHOLE LOT WORSE than this one, but that would only make me a big liar, like those who said the movie is great...

Isolation is set in Ireland on a rundown cattle farm owned by Daniel (John Lynch), sinister genetic scientist John (Marcel Iures) along with local vet Orla (Essie Davis) have been carrying out genetic experiments on Daniel's livestock. As a result of trying to genetically produce more fertile Cow's with shorter gestation periods one of Daniel's Cow's gives birth to a deformed mutant which itself is pregnant with six mutant babies, after killing the mother Cow & baby Calf Orla carries out a crude autopsy during which one of the mutant foetus creatures crawl's off unnoticed. The mutant foetus starts to infect the other Cow's & more mutants are born, the infection & creatures must be stopped on Daniel's farm or risk a widespread epidemic throughout the world...This British & Irish co-production was written & directed by Billy O'Brien & is a sort of mix of Alien (1979) with it's parasitic creatures that burst out of stomachs & it's water dripping, chain clinking visuals & sonics, the slimly design of the monsters comes right from The Thing (1982) & the whole genetic experiments gone wrong on a farm reeks of Black Sheep (2006) all three of which are better than Isolation. For a start Isolation is slow going, really slow going at times & there's not a whole lot to it other than there's this farm with a killer mutant baby Cow monster crawling around. The monster doesn't really do that much apart from scratch a few people & the script focuses on what it represents rather than what it does, the idea that if it escapes the farm the mutant Calf infection will spread across the world is mentioned often but ultimately Isolation never leaves the confines of the farm. The character's are alright & slightly stronger than expected if a little dull, Isolation isn't your typical Hollywood horror & there's no good looking girls to strip or young teenagers to save the day, the character's here are pretty believable even if they are rather forgettable. The genetic experiments are never gone into in any great detail & the scripts message about not tampering with Mother Nature or altering genetics for gain & failed scientific experiments is far from original. At a shade over 90 minutes Isolation goes for a slow build-up & never really gets going, quite simply there were too many times when I was sat there watching this bored.Along with a slow script the direction is also pretty slow with some fairly long shots that drag scenes out, Isolation is a pretty dull looking film set on a dirty & rundown cattle farm in the bleak Irish countryside. The monster itself isn't seen killing anyone, it's implied it killed someone but otherwise it doesn't seem that interested randomly killing people. There's a bit of gore, there's plenty of Cow guts, some blood splatter, a bolt gun is used to kill a Cow & a guy while the monster itself is mainly kept in the shadow's although it's also nice to see a modern film without any CGI computer effects. The whole look & feel of Isolation reminded me of Alien, sure Alien set on a farm in Ireland but Alien none the less. With a supposed budget of about £2,900,000 this had a reasonable amount spent on it, it's very well made with slick production design but again I found it rather bleak, forgettable & dull. Filmed in County Wicklow in Ireland. The acting is solid from a decent cast not chosen for their looks.Isolation is a film that many seem to like, personally I didn't since it felt far too similar to lots of other genetic experiments gone wrong type horror films without distinguishing itself in the slightest. I found it slow to the point of boredom, somewhat predictable & the warning about genetic experimentation & it's horrible consequences is far from original.

My guess is that Irish director Billy O'Brien grew up loving his horror films, his 'Alien' and his 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' in particular and there's even a little bit of Frankenstein in there for good measure. These films, and a few others, pop up a couple of times in Isolation, a horror film that is fairly self-explained by its title, and is actually the bane of the piece. Like fellow contemporary horror director Eli Roth, with his Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes inspired Cabin Fever and Hostel films, O'Brien has created something that does the job to a degree but is distinctly average throughout, providing little in the way of originality and quite a bit in the splatter column but not necessarily being anything brilliant overall.I mean, it isn't anything special. It's a horror film with all the typical foundations of a horror film that draws on a lot of previous texts and ideas and a lot of those previous ideas have been done really, really well in much better films. Here, the filmmakers have got a muddy and dank look out of the director of photography but in terms of original story or ideas, they're running on empty. The idea behind several people being trapped in a location is nothing new apart from the fact it's a farm, something that perhaps hasn't been used before. The idea that the anti-human component of the piece is some sort of wired, mutating creature has been done and the film's overall catalyst distinctly reminded me of Frankenstein, as I mentioned. But maybe that's the point, maybe its supposed to be some sort of statement on animal testing or cloning or whatever but it really just ends up as being a bit of a splatter-fest and not a particularly scary one at that. This is due to the majority of the splatter content being reduced to the executing of farmyard animals, those certain scenes actually feel relatively out of place and distracting from the real horror-come-splatter we're all supposed to be here for.The film sees John, played by a Romanian actor named Marcel Iures who around about the time had been getting an increased amount of Western attention with the likes of Layer Cake, Goal! and The Cave either already on or on the brink of making his C.V. The fact he's a deranged Eastern European doctor and the casting of a Romanian actor gives us an odd but balanced feel of both Frankenstein and Dracula in equal measure. John is using a farm in Ireland run by Dan (Lynch), who has two squatters in a caravan placed just outside his entrance, they are Jaime (Harris) and Mary (Negga) and they're on the run from someone. The film's intentions and ideas are all firmly placed in the right areas. The establishment of two separate groups of people that will eventually come together is an interesting one, one that I'm sure draws on inspiration from something like Assault on Presinct 13 but with a lot less antagonism. There are some ideas and scenes that work, but feel as if they should have worked better. The incident during which someone visits Dan's farm looking for the two stowaways with one of them in close proximity is a threat from outside the boundaries of the farm that isn't of the anti-human component and yet could spell disaster for certain characters. The scene is tense enough and acts as a precursor to the ideas and situations the character will find themselves in: feet away from being caught, and that's something you really don't want to happen. But it's incredible how long the film takes in the setting up of the predicament. There is a lot of talk and establishing that there's something wrong with the cows and the experiment may have gone wrong and we're all supposed to ask each other "Oh, I wonder what terrible, terrible things lurk within" but the on-screen build up of something very much off-screen wears a little thin, not because you want the film to cut to the gore which is a silly mindset to have during any film, but because it just gets repetitive. There is a lot of head scratching and explaining to the audience as to what is going on and what all these experiments and scientific things mean and before too long, wouldn't you know it: it just becomes Alien on an Irish farm. Pure and simple. There is a scene nearer the end in which the now lead role, who echoes Ripley in both gender and transition into said role, crawls around under the floor amidst some grates as the monster stalks her. It is very reminiscent of the scene in Alien during which the hapless crew member scurries around in the vent shaft with a flamethrower to defend themselves whilst the rest watch on via a radar. When we actually get to see the creature, it is a rather disappointing mess of skin and ooze – sort of a GCSE papier-mâché piece submitted for the teacher's cruel assessment. There is no long, slimy tail slithering down from the ceiling in a massive cargo bay as another hapless crew member searches for a lost cat; it's just a mess of eyes, limbs and a couple of bones stuck on for good measure. The film was direct to DVD in America and Italy amongst many other nations, I'm sure. It isn't of that low level, but the film certainly isn't anything to shout about.

ISOLATION is a British horror thriller set in an isolated farm, in Ireland. The plot is about a predator creature that hosts initially in a pregnant cow but then it comes to the outside spreading the terror through the farm... The plot (something in the ALIEN genre...) is not original at all but the setting is! I guess I haven't watched too many horror films set in a farm, with cows and stuff...The production is good. The film is suspenseful and has a great ambiance (good illumination, camera work). There're also good gore scenes. For its genre it's a nice film. I score it 6/10.
