I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.

Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

I've seen the series, read the book, decided to give the film a shot. I wondered how they would be able to tell a story spanning 20 years in a 2 hour film. They couldn't.A lot of movies are based on events - a bank robbery, a kidnapping, a terrorist attack averted, a hijacking, you get the point. With gang movies, a lot of the drug stuff is condensed to a montage, with the focus being on the gang politics instead. This movie tried to do everything - two kidnappings, one terror plot, a gang's rise, gang politics, the business of the gang, gang wars (with rival gangs) and a court trial. And if that's not enough, the film wanted to show the side of law enforcement too, showing the detective trying to bust the gang. 20 years in 2 hours 30 minutes. There is a montage every 5 minutes, actually, most things are shown in quick cuts + music montages - the gang introduction, kidnapping, Terrible, drug business, Moro affair, Bologna... I stopped counting after that. The choice of casting is terrible (no pun intended). Terrible, one of the scariest people in the TV show, is shown to be a wimp, crying in front of the gang. Accorsi is a good actor, but terrible as Scialoja. He's guilty of overacting here. Screaming and waving his arms around like a cartoon Italian. Freddo, the best character in the TV show, was ruined as well. In the TV show, he's a deep and troubled character, taking you along with him in an existential crisis. In this film, pretty-boy Kim Rossi Stuart plays Freddo and actually says "Why do you hate me, huh? Is it because I'm pretty?" Seriously. Libano is a criminal mastermind on the show, on the film he's an idiot who doesn't know how to handle a gun.If you didn't know the actors, you would think that this is the low budget film remake of the TV show. The production values are low. The show looks cinematic, here, this looks like a TV film. This film fails in comparison to the show. It's less of a film and more of a collection of spoilers for a great TV show. Even if you have no interest whatsoever in the show, skip this film. It's not worth your time, unless you want to see a film about a gangster drug lord called "The Terrible" crying and wimpering in front of a boy who says "Don't hate me because I'm pretty."

By chance I stumbled on a DVD copy of this film and have just finished watching it - all 150 minutes of it. The 2.5 hrs went by fast as I was absorbed by the story and the characters in it. Acting by the several actors was good, although I know none of them. Directing was smooth. The only things missing was my understanding of the political backdrop in Italy in the 70's. This knowledge would have enabled to understanding the plot better. On the other hand, my ignorance of the director, the actors, and the backdrop time period gives me total objectivity - I watched it strictly for a cinematic experience. And I was not disappointed.

The problem with this movie is that it is misunderstood. It contains the Hollywood likings with it being compared to scarface and godfather..... American gangster movies. This is NOT an American movie its European, it contains everything that a contemporary European movie has at its heart. The movie focuses on love, emotions, relationships and evokes those true emotions of past historical events. Yet with Hollywood narrative conventions this will confuse or put a strictly Hollywood audience on edge and raise questions. But do not be put off this is an excellent movie those who like the documentary style of City of God will not be disappointed with this movie as the cinematography will have frequent reminders of it! The acting is superb there are few flaws in any of the acting in this movie, all is believable and lovable, as an audience you are automatically emotionally attached to the characters. Especially those of Ice, Dandy and Lebanese. This movie is hard to criticise yet it may confuse some members of its audience yet definitely worth seeing! For those who have never seen a foreign film this maybe hard going with its over 2 hour running time but you will not be disappointed!

I'm disappointed as well as surprised on the user's comments on this great movie. I saw this movie many times and maybe my being Italian has let me understood better then others what the movie is all about. It's about the old life in Italy , it's about the real criminals that took over for years the control on one of the eldest city in the world,Rome. All the actors played their characters based on the real story of Rome's most terrible criminals. It's not a Hollywood production , it's not a tale , it's real not based , real happened. The movie is very good , and maybe knowing a little bit of history (in this case Italian) helps to get all meaningsThis is my own point of view.....ciao
