This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
This was almost a good movie. I was frustrated actually because it had so much potential but the vague jumpy plot, confusing script and dull direction made this an unremarkable watchIts set in South London, a crime drama that follows Colin Ferrell as ex-con Mitchel, trying to go straight upon his release from prison. His mate Billy gets him a job as a handyman/bodyguard for a reclusive actress (Keira Knightley) who is constantly hounded by the paparazzi. They fall in love. He's also got; a crazy, strung out sister, accompanies Billy on rent collection trips, gets pulled into a revenge thing and is soon being forced back into a life of crime by Billy's mob boss the very nasty (Ray Winstone) who will stop at nothing to get Mitchel to work for him.Colin Ferrell is very good here, unfortunately all the characters are painted kinda lifeless and the story at times confusing, or not spending enough time on any one thing. You just have to assume something happened as it is never really shown. For example Keira and Colin in a short scene at the country house... "we fell in love over a cup of tea in the country." Oh really, you're in love now!? Hmm, I must of missed that somehow. They share zero chemistry together which didn't help their "love" story either.David Thewlis was brilliant as Billy, he stole every scene he was in. The acting is good all round though. Shame they didn't have much to work with.
I was planning to visit Great Britain. Now I will not. Not the gangsters. Children that are killing just for fun. This terrifies me. Where this western world is going? Harry Mitchel (Colin Farrell) just got out of prison. He's a criminal of some notoriety. His old friend Billy Norton (Ben Chaplin) is a low level gangster. Briony (Anna Friel) is his wild sister. Penny (Ophelia Lovibond) has a small job with reclusive somewhat retired actress Charlotte (Keira Knightley). She's holed up in her mansion with friend manager Jordan (David Thewlis) surrounded by the paparazzi. Corrupt detective Bailey (Eddie Marsan) tells Mitchel to avoid Billy but he still follows Billy collecting money. Billy has a proposal from his boss Rob Gant (Ray Winstone) to rob Charlotte's mansion for the car collection. Gant wants to pull Mitchel into his organization but Mitchel resists. In another side story, a couple of kids kill a homeless friend and he feels a need to get revenge.There are a couple of good performances in this pulpy British gangster movie. Colin Farrell is quite good in a darker moody role. Ray Winstone comes in and blows this movie up. There are quite a few wonderful British actors that I love. There is just too many stories going on. It would be better off concentrating on a few less characters and put more attention to Gant. This has a scatter shoot effect.
Ex-con Colin Farrell is released from prison and take a job as a minder to an actress prowled on by the paparazzi. He also tries to resist the pull back into crime by the local gangster, keen to have him on his payroll.If this plot was all this film had, it would be run of the mill. Instead, Colin Farrell fills his character out beautifully to counterbalance a reliably excellent Ray Winstone as the slightly-polished savage in his gangster. The performances of Knightley, Thewlis and the brilliant and rarely-seen Chaplin add great flavour to the storytelling. The sum total is a compelling film with depth of character.It's hard to tell oft-told story elements but the way to success seems to be to tell them well rather than invent twists and turns to try and impress the audience. This film gets that balance of approach right and is a fine watch.
