Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

Oxford Professor Joseph Coupland (Jared Harris) leads a pair of student researchers plus a camera man, known as the "quiet ones" to discover and cure the insanity of Jane Harper (Olivia Cooke) through experimental means. Dr. Coupland believes Jane has "negative energy" that manifests itself into telekinetics which can be controlled to cure the patient. Belief in the supernatural is not tolerated.During the process, Brian (Sam Claflin) the camera man develops mutual feelings for Jane who has an imaginary demon named Evie. The time frame for this film is 1974 and it makes use of Slade's "Come On Feel the Noise." Early in the movie, the funding for the experiment gets cut so Brian volunteers to use cheaper lower quality film, just what I wanted to hear. Part of the movie is amateur hand held genre while some of it is not.The film scare factor doesn't pick up until about an hour into it. It then has some bad minor clue twists which didn't help the film's cause.Might work as a cheap rental. Not overpowering.Parental Guide: 2 f-bombs. Implied sex. Brief nudity.

The Quiet Ones is (another) supernatural thriller based (very loosely) on 'real events'. The story centers around an eccentric professor who's life work is to try and extract and isolate a poltergeist, from a haunted/possessed person. In this case, the possessed is an attractive young woman. Unsurprisingly, the movie is a mixture of conventional film making and 'found-footage'. In the case of The Quiet Ones',our oddball professor (Jared Harris) and his team hire a young film-maker named Ian (Sam Claflin) to document the experiment. Things quickly spiral out of control, as it becomes apparent that the crew is dealing with a malevolent spirit rather than your run of the mill paranormal oddity. There's really absolutely nothing original about the film aside from a few cool CGI effects, but unlike many of it's other paranormal counterparts (like Insidious or Sinister), The Quiet Ones is thoroughly and surprisingly entertaining. This shocked me because I went into the movie thinking that it was going to suck big time, that I'd have to turn it off after 30 minutes of tom foolery, but I was pleasantly gripped and sucked into the story for all of it's duration. I guess part of what made it stand out from a movie like Sinister is that the story was told through a scientific lens, whereas in other flops like the aforementioned title, The Conjuring 2, and Sinister, the screen writers were simply asking the audience as well as the characters to believe too much. The example that comes to mind is the part in Insidious when the old woman who's some sort of psychic explains that both the son and the father are masters of 'Astral Projection', which Patrick Wilson accepts as a plausible and rational explanation far too soon. If someone came at me like that I'd hit them over the head with a baseball bat!In conclusion, while nothing really new, or particularly amazing, 'The Quiet Ones' is a decent enough paranormal/horror flick. If you enjoyed the Atticus Institute (which was slightly better IMO), you'll likely dig this one too.

so in my humble reviews i try to focus more on who would like the movie, not why it is "objectively" good or bad. its not the most thrilling or creepy movie but it definitely has its moments. the antagonist isn't quite usual and your view on the characters changes a lot while watching. what makes this movie really interesting is the whole set(ting). the 70's optics are fresh and lively and you instantly dive into the whole thing. even for me as a late 90's kid it feels totally natural and not boring or bland at all. about the plot: it is quite mysterious till the end, you can make up many theories up until things get explained. sadly, the explanation is a little too flat and easy. that would be my only big criticism. coming to a conclusion id say: this movie is good for some decent thrill, and major 70's atmosphere. it even has some found footage elements without completely relying on that, which shakes things up a little every now and then. overall a nice experience.

Like many other devout Horror fans out there (yet unlike just as many) I personally hate seeing the annoying words "based on a true story", "inspired by true events" and the likes in the beginning of Horror films. To me, it means that as long as 0.01% of the film's plot is based on something that is (or used to be) real - the creators can use this cheap trick and make the less intelligent viewer just a little bit (or even more) extra afraid. Don't get me wrong, I happen to be a fan of cheap tricks, jump scares and the likes make for a much better viewing experience for me. I still recognize these tricks for what they are: cheap.Seeing as how The Quiet Ones boasts having factual origins, I did a little digging (honestly just a little, the second Google result proved to be sufficiently informative) and found out that on one hand this film's plot is actually based on quite a bit of true occurrences (at least more than other films claim to be). On the other hand, these "true" occurrences themselves (better known as The Philip Experiments) turned out to be no more than a hoax.Having said that, let us focus on The Quiet Ones as a Horror film, and say that in my opinion it is quite alright. Characters and acting are pretty good (with the exception of Olivia Cooke and Jarred Harris who were excellent), and the story is quite interesting and kept me personally curious and guessing until the very end. The twist towards the ending and the ending itself were great, and I myself can't think of a better way the film could have ended.I've mentioned cheap tricks, and The Quiet Ones definitely uses quite a few jump-scares (which as I've said I quite enjoy). What I don't enjoy are "mockumentaries" and scenes that are presented through the eye of a camera. It's a matter of personal taste and the only film using this method which I liked was the one who made it famous - The Blair Witch Project. One reason I do respect this film is that it doesn't show the "evil spirit' for more than a split second, knowing that lack of creativity, or budget, or both prevented the creators from making a "supernatural evil" worthy of camera time. All in all, I enjoyed watching this film. I didn't find it to be innovative or original, but it wasn't at all bad. I could think of 10 Horror films off the top of my head to recommend before I'd recommend this one, but I wouldn't say it isn't worthy of watching.
