Silver Bullet

The small city of Tarker's Mill is startled by a series of sadistic murders. The population fears that this is the work of a maniac. During a search a mysterious, hairy creature is observed. Format: DVD Language: English Released: 1985Director: Daniel AttiasStarring: Gary Busey, Everett McGill, Corey HaimSilver Bullet is based on a Stephen King story; now before you recoil in horror, given the appalling history of films based on his works and I fully understand your reaction; give me a moment to convince you it's not half bad. This film is unashamedly an exploitation film, Daniel Attias doesn't even try to hide this in his direction of the film. He and his cast, right from the onset, are clearly embracing this and having a lot of fun with it. You too should just let go, enjoy the overly hammed up performances and unashamedly over-the-top gory fun that this film offers.Unlike some exploitation films, and in recent times a number of massive multimillion dollar blockbusters, the acting from the lead character Corey Haim is very good. He plays young Marty Coslaw who is paralysed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair for the entire film, although thanks to his anti-hero Uncle Red (Gary Busey), these are stooped up power chairs that resemble classic motorcycles more than your normal wheelchair. For someone so young and in such a genre of horror as the exploitation sub-genre, his ability to carry a film in such a convincing way is a credit to his acting skills. A cocky, happy go lucky, all American boy is, for once in a film, a joy to watch, even with the other main cast member, Gary Buseys', great, totally over-the-top, performance. There is a plot of sorts, albeit the type you could fit on the back of a postage stamp, yet it never seems to matter as you are from the start, on board a roller-coaster ride with Marty as he slowly unravels the mystery of who or what is killing his fellow townsfolk in such a grossed out fashion. The fact that I cared so much about Marty, his sister Jane (Megan Follows) and Uncle Red by the final showdown with the werewolf was something I didn't expected from such a film.If you are looking for a deep, scary horror film about werewolves, just move along, as you won't find anything that even remotely resembles that here. If, however, you are looking for an over the top gory, fun, slightly hammy ride you can't go wrong with Silver Bullet. It never tries to be anything other than a fun film that will, surprisingly at times, pull at your heartstrings and have you rooting for the kids as well as their alcoholic anti-hero Uncle Red.

Although I knew who's werewolf from the 'very beginning, it does not make this movie any less tense or fun. Understandable considering it was King who wrote script based on his own novel. I would not say it's horror movie. It's more children/family fantasy drama spiced with some horror elements. Cast is very good, especially 14 years old Corey Haim, who perfectly played little paraplegic hunting werewolf. A bit naive, but warm, fun and with just about right amount of suspense for one nice family King.8/10

Stephen King's Silver Bullet is one of the most charming werewolf flicks in the stable, one that combines adult orientated, gory horror with the fable-esque, childlike sensibility that seems to permeate King's work. It's also quite funny, thanks to the presence of a boisterous, rotund and quite young Gary Busey. Young Marty (Corey Haim) lives in a sleepy little town where not much of anything happens, until a rash of brutal murders occur in the area. Attributed to a serial killer by townsfolk, Marty has other ideas, specifically that a werewolf has taken up residence among them, and is snatching victims in the night. Taken seriously only by his sister (Megan Follows) and kindly Uncle Red (Busey) he bravely stalks suspect number one, who happens to be the creepy town priest (an intimidating Everett Mcgill). Things escalate into a series of gooey, effects driven set pieces that drip with wonderful 80's schlock and awe, as of course is the tradition with anything based on King's work. Other notables include Terry O Quinn, Bill Smitrovitch, Lawrence Tierney, King's own son Joe Wright, and late great character actor James Gammon in an opening sequence cameo. It's not all that scary, but more about the beloved tropes of such stories as these, the timeless monsters that inhabit them, as well the the intrepid young heroes whose lives growing up and finding themselves equally as important and high stakes as the horror elements.

Silver Bullet is a really fun and pretty darn good werewolf flick. It does focus a bit on Marty Coslaw (Haim) a wheelchair bound boy, his relationship with his sister Meg (Follows) and Uncle Red (Busy) but this threesome will end up finding out who is the werewolf and become almost comical werewolf hunters in the end. What made this film besides the idea of watching a werewolf? Gary Busy as Uncle Red. He put on quite a show and made a really "cool" uncle. He's crazy in this one.Quite a few comical moments, some exciting one's but not a lot of werewolf action until the end of the film yet it's enjoyable to watch from start to finish.8/10
