Best movie ever!
A story that's too fascinating to pass by...
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
"In a World" (2013) is a comedy about a woman named Carol, played by writer and director Lake Bell, that overcomes the stereotype of premier voice-over actors. I think this is a strong film, specifically for woman, but mostly for anyone who has ever been doubted by a loved one. It gave me a sense of accomplishment even though the story wasn't about me. It made me think about times where I was doubted by my bosses to as to whether I could abandon my southern accent to narrate a news story. I felt like Carol when I was able to prove them wrong. Lake Bell has a wonderful mind. I would have never imagined this film to be an actual concept and she made it happen and well. There were few creative shots, but I believe it to be very unnecessary in this film. Much like the story itself, everything was pretty much straight forward. Carol's "oddness" rings true of many people today, but it didn't take away from her inner strength. This is an outstanding film that should garner a viewing from aspiring writers, directors, and film buffs.
If this movie shows on a screen or pops up in a database near you, go watch, you won't be disappointed. So often comedies are announced as 'hilarious' but go overboard, mostly on the easy cheesy laugh front. Not this one. Both family comedy, Hollywood insider story and father-daughter drama, it has all the elements to keep you entertained, even if the happy end is over-sweet. Lake Bell seems to be all-involved with writing, directing and starring, but this does not seem to have had a negative impact. On the contrary. Her role as the forlorn accent-obsessed voice coach surrounded by male chauvinists, a sister who's in a marriage that's fall apart the odd lesbian and some true friends is wonderfully played out. The central theme, about the role of voice in the movie industry and life itself, is played out. Lots of language and insider jokes, cameos (by Eva Longoria among others), actors enjoying every bit of playing out their often outrageous characters, this is a winner in many categories. Enjoy.
In a world, an independent bold movie that effectively challenges the status quo of gender in our society. It is thought provoking and gives the audience a fresh perspective which can be an eye opener for some. The lead actress, Lake Bell, plays as Carol in the movie. Carol faces many challenges as she climbs her way to be the first woman to utter the famous words "In a world." Throughout those challenges, Carol never ceased to fight the good fight. The movie elegantly proves the point that our society continues to be male predominant and puts woman as second class. Carol, through her feminist views challenges that status quo and teaches us that not only woman can support feminism but also men can have a role as portrayed by her boyfriend actor Demetri Martin playing Louis.
For the majority of this film, I enjoyed the simple plot. A father who does not want to accept his daughter for the talented woman that she is, and I was not disappointed; at least up until the last 15 minutes of the movie. Take away the overly obvious symbolism of the 'quadrilogy' trailer the father and daughter are both fighting to be the voice of, and the film still offers a strong independent female lead who finally gets appreciated for her obvious talent in an industry that she believed to be only interested in male voices. Sounds great right? And when we finally hear the trailer and its her voice, we can all feel incredibly happy and excited because she had succeeded, she had show not only the industry but also her father that she was good enough to utter the words "In A World..." Until her conversation with the woman in charge of choosing which voice actor would get the part, at which time we learn that in fact the daughter was not the best person for the role, and even though they set it up to make it sound like she was, in fact it was all set up to somehow "further feminism because the movie is demoralizing to women" which completely defeats the purpose of the daughter's development as a character. Even the father's weak attempt at reconciliation was not enough to save this movie. In the end, all I felt for this movie was shame, that for once the woman couldn't just win, and have the movie end on the note that woman can compete in a male dominated industry, without being handed things simply because they are women. Even the father's girlfriend is forced to make a complete transformation into a strong woman in control, while the entire movie she is mocked and ridiculed for playing into the traps of men. This movie sets the wrong example for woman everywhere, and is a weak attempt at "feminist" filmmaking that achieves the exact opposite of what it set out to do.
