Simply A Masterpiece
Wow! What a bizarre film! Unfortunately the few funny moments there were were quite overshadowed by it's completely weird and random vibe throughout.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
The acting in this movie is really good.
Those reviewers who call this one of the worst movies ever have apparently not seen critically acclaimed stinkers like "Ordinary People" and "Little Miss Sunshine." I mention those two over-rated snoozers because 1. the acting and direction in OP is a lot worse than that in "Conquerer," and 2. the story and characters in LMS are a lot more far-fetched than those in "Conquerer."This is a typical epic film from the 1950s. It features a great all-around cast that does what great casts did back then - deliver a movie at a level that showed their talent and professionalism. Most of the main characters in this film are taken by well-known and talented actors. It's not like they all suddenly forgot what they were doing. They put their talents to work and it shows.Sure, John Wayne sounds like John Wayne, but wouldn't it be worse if he tried to be something he never was? Do we expect actors to learn a Mongolian accent to speak English dialogue? That would be a lot more farcical than what we have here: a star delivering a star performance that his fans would enjoy. All of the actors adopt a "white man come, big trouble" way of delivering their lines. That's just the way it was in the 1950s, a convention accepted as readily as Nazi officers in movies speaking with a British accent. White people playing Mongols? Well, white people played everybody back in the day.The battle scenes are effective and more-realistic than the norm for the time. The musical score by Victor Young is really delightful, a mixture of quasi-Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov, with a "love theme" that's quite appealing. Is the story historically accurate? No. Guess what? It's Hollywood.Give this movie a chance, preferably by viewing it uninterrupted on DVD with the sound piped through your stereo set-up. You might be pleasantly surprised.I'll be watching this movie a lot more than I will modern movies with historic/mythical story lines like Kevin Kostner's "Robin Hood" and Mel Gibson's "Braveheart." At least "The Conquerer" does its Hollywood era proud in a way that those updated versions never will.Recommended.
It's a Howard Hughes production, which in itself makes this worth watching. Of even more interest, this stars John Wayne as Temudjin - Genghis Khan - as it shows that title character rising to power as Khan of the Mongols and ultimately a good part of the world. Wayne is a curious choice for the role. I've never found him to be the most versatile of actors. He plays cowboys extremely well and he plays soldiers reasonably well. As Khan, he gets to spend a lot of time on a horse and he leads a lot of Mongols into battle. Combining the two types of characters he plays so well, you'd think this movie was tailor made for him. The problem is that he neither looks nor sounds like a typical Mongol! Frankly, Wayne's presence here is unfortunately somewhat distracting. The story here isn't all that bad, and for the type of historic epic that was often made in this era, it's fairly close to the historical facts in many ways, but there's also a lot that distracts from the history. The romance, for example, between Temudjin and Bortai (Susan Hayward.) The romance was too forced and simply seemed unnatural for the context. There's also an extended scene in a rival Khan's court which features a series of dancing girls who seem to have come out of a Las Vegas show. That also took away from the credibility of the movie. The sets were all right but unspectacular and the dialogue came across at times as somewhat stilted (I'm not even really sure that that means but the word seems to fit!)Let's be honest. This is not by any definition a great movie - or even a particularly good one. It is, however, definitely a curiosity worth watching if you're a movie buff, primarily for the combination of Wayne and Hughes.
I give this movie ten zs. I couldn't get through it before falling asleep. The other comments mentioned the groaner lines (i.e. "Farewell, Tarter Woman") but what they didn't mention is that the whole script is a groaner. Seems that Susan Hayward's wardrobe was recycled from a biblical flick. All the roles are over the top, from Wayne looking like a cross between a carpetbagger and the cat Gideon from Pinocchio, to Hayward doing a true biblical vamp. Wayne, not a versatile actor, sounds whiny in this role. Even the action shots of the battles and horses were boring. If a movie is based on a place in a certain time, it should have some relation to that place and period, or at least depart in a witty or funny way. This depiction of Mongolia around 1200 did neither. This movie deserves the "slow death".If you want to see a good Genghis Khan movie that was actually shot in Mongolia and has some realism, see the recent Genghis Khan, by Aoki Okami. If you want to see other movies shot in Mongolia, see Genghis Blues or the movies of Byambasurem Davaa: The Weeping Camel and The Cave of the Yellow Dog.If you want to see some good battle scenes with horses, see Seven Samurai. This movie maybe good for a laugh, but I couldn't stay awake long enough.
I'm probably not part of the majority here, but I think this is a good movie. A lot of people are probably knocking it before they've even seen it because John Wayne plays Temujin. As the story goes, John Wayne wanted the role and he was very serious about it. He found the script in Dick Powell's office. I'm sure Powell had his reasons for wanting to throw the script out, but it can't be that it was that horrible of a script. The script is actually pretty decent. I can't complain about the make-up either because I think that was very well done too. John Wayne, between the make-up and his hair, really looks Asian in this.People that criticize this movie keep pointing out the nationalities of everyone involved. If you are going to do that then you are just nitpicking. Yes, John Wayne is a white man playing a Mongol. But you couldn't have expected them to cast a real Mongol in the role. Whites played Orientals and Native Americans all the time back then. Anthony Quinn, who is of Mexican and Irish descent, played Attila the Hun once. Omar Sharif, once played Genghis Khan. Stephen Boyd played Kahn's blood brother Jamuga. That Sharif and Boyd movie was horrible, by the way. The Conqueror is way better than that. The Conqueror is more accurate too. You're probably going to wonder, "Why John Wayne?" I said the same exact thing and I thought the movie was silly at first. But I actually sat down and watched it and I thought it was good. The Conqueror's opening is great. It opens with Temujin riding through the dessert with his Mongol army. The scenes of the army riding are great. They are shot so well. The action scenes of the Mongols fighting enemy armies were great too. If you want action, this has plenty of it. Another nice touch was the love story between Temujin and Bortai. Bortai is played by Susan Hayward. She was pretty decent in her role. I enjoyed her scenes with John Wayne. I also enjoyed Pedro Armendariz in his scenes with John Wayne. Armendariz was also decent in his role as Jamuga, Temujin's blood brother. A previous reviewer said that John Wayne and Pedro Armendariz are not believable as brothers. Keep in mind, the movie never says they are brothers, but they keep stressing blood brothers.Overall, I think The Conqueror was a pretty good movie. It pushed all of the right buttons for me. I enjoyed it very much. The Conqueror is a well made movie, with good performances, great directing, great cinematography, decent writing, great costumes and great make-up. I thought the score by Victor Young was great too. I especially loved the Romantic theme that Young uses throughout the movie. That was very memorable. If you ever get a chance, see this movie. If you are interested in the subject matter, check it out. If you are a fan of the old time classics or those Hollywood epics, check it out. If you are a fan of John Wayne and you want to see him in a different role for a change, check it out. John Wayne won't disappoint you. The Conqueror and John Wayne are not bad at all. Don't knock this movie until you've seen it. People were way too harsh when they placed their votes on IMDb. I'll bet that some people gave this movie a 1 without even seeing it. All they saw was John Wayne's name in the credits.
