It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

I adored this movie. It got sooooo so many bad reviews so I wasn't super excited to watch it at first. But when I did, I loved it! It's definitely full of some rather stupid and obvious humor but I thought it was hella funny! Haha to me it seems very much like a SNL skit that was stretched out to movie length so I can see how some people may grow tired of it. But I thought it was very fun to watch. I think if you like to joke around while watching movies, this is a good one. If you like to sit back and just watch, maybe you'd be better off with something else. But honestly, I think all the negative reviews are too harsh and uptight. It's super silly, very quotable, and it makes you giggle. My sister and I still die laughing every time we watch it or even just talk about it. Bottom line: amazingly hilarious, probably a little dumb.

A small business owner (Amy Poehler) is about to lose her shop to a major corporate development. This film seems to get a bad rap, with people saying it is not a good satire or parody. I respectfully, and strongly, disagree. So many movie conventions are turned on their head. Obviously, the traditional romantic comedy blueprint, but even more than that. And some moments had me laughing out loud (literally).Although "Wet Hot American Summer" is considered a modern classic by some, I think "They Came Together" is the superior film. It's more mature, more consistent. Maybe it will take a few years, but I see this becoming a cult film.

Joel and Molly are on a double date with their friends Kyle and Karen. After Kyle tells them a story about how he and Karen disagree on the Sunday paper, they ask Joel and Molly how they met. They describe their relationship as something like a romantic comedy. Joel is the typical leading man that is attractive without being threatening, and Molly is a quirky and klutzy woman. Their relationship, as most romantic comedies do, begins in New York City.......This is one of those films that you shouldn't like, it shouldn't work, but for some reason, it's a barrel of laughs from start to finish. The film is basically a satire of basically all the romantic comedies made from 1989 to present, but it most notably references You've Got Mail, Forget Paris, and When Harry Met Sally. And for the most part, the film gets it right. The cast are great, Rudd is as likable as he ever is and has great chemistry with Poehler, and at times, they are much better than the material, so they make the film that little bit better than it should be.But every now and again, the movie decides to go full spoof rather than satire, and this is when the film makes you cringe rather than smile. The satirical references to the genre they are mocking are spot on and close to genius, but the sight gags just don't work, just like spoofs haven't worked since the last Naked Gun movie, so luckily they don't use them too often. The end of the film is completely bonkers, featuring Michael Shannon with a sword, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan probably being the coolest he ever will be.So the film works, it really shouldn't, but the cast are so likable, they should have toned down the spoof parts though.

This is a movie you have to "get" to appreciate, and if you miss the foundation of it (or simply don't find it funny), you are going to suffer watching it. It is jam packed with dead on, often subtle (although usually not) clichés of the ham fisted acting, trite screenplay lines, and tired plot points that are so commonplace in American films that you may mistake the film itself for being clichéd, ham fisted, trite, and tired. But make no mistake - this is not a "stupid" movie. Instead, it is asking a lot from its audience, maybe more than they can give. I'm not sure if anyone who is under thirty, or has not experienced the hours upon hours of sitcoms, television and film dramas, and of course, romantic comedies that this film draws from, can be in on the joke.Personally, I howled with laughter throughout.
